ok i have 3 questions at once and didnt want to start 3 different threads.

please help me on these.

1. i thought 454s were 2 bolt mains but i took the oil pan off and each bearing cap has 4 bolts. is that a good or bad thing.

2. in the past someone has replaced the 454 heads with 427 heads. what does that mean.

3. i thought my rear main seal was leaking (thats why i pulled the pan) but the back of the engine is dry. the torque converter is dry. the rear main cap is dry. the only oil that i could find that was out of place was on the side of the engine where the inspection plate that covers the torque converter. could that have came from a leaking oil pan gasket instead.

i would have thought that the rear main was leaking that there would be oil all over the place once i pulled the inspection pan.

if anyone can answer these i would really appreciate it
thanks

1) a 4 bolt main is more durable than a 2 bolt main. So that is a good thing.

2) i have no idea, but i'm sure someone else does.

3) I'm not sure about big blocks, but on small blocks the oil pressure sending unit is on top of the block behind the intake manifold. If that is leaking you could have oil dripping down the back of the block. It would look like it was coming from the rear main seal area. But I don't know where it is on a BBC.

Good Luck!

Generally, a good thing. A 4 bolt main will hold better without creeping than a 2 bolt, and will take higher HP and RPM loads over a 2 bolt.

Smaller combustion chambers, and higher compression ratio. Or, maybe they couldn't find correct 454 heads.

Could be the pan gasket, or higher up on the block such as the intake gasket.

There would be oil on the backside of the torque converter if the main seal was leaking.

G'day!:w

sweet you guys are great

so i have already replaced the intake gasket and have a 1 piece felpro oil pan gasket.

i knew that my block wasnt original since it is stamped CE but i guess i got lucky with the heads and 4 bolt block.

now i dont need to try to replace the rear seal anymore. i think i am ok.
oil pan i think i can do.
