A good reason you shouldn't use this type of air filter.

One back fire thru the carb is all it'll take to produce this result. Burned right thru the foam. Get a metal lid on those air filters. I imagine those K&N extreme lids could produce similar results.

d'oh

I've had some good backfires. I'd just swapped distributors and didn't have the timing quite right. Had a nice 5ft flame shoot out the top.

FIRE!

been there too....what an amazing sight..i didnt have the cover on and the hood was open....atleast a 4ft ball of flame....yes i actually had an extinguisher ready but it happened so fast and it was over...i wish i had a camera for the look on my wifes face!:eek

I just this morning was reading an article about a guy with a Vette that had a piece of the foam air filter do that, catch fire and melt his hood. :eek

70Sting,

Tight ride!

Chaz,

How did you manage to build the alternating picture show of your fine car?

Foam air filters are J U N K, pure and simple... they only keep out insects, birds, and small children. Otherwise they filter absolutely NOTHING and are a fire hazard. You may as well run no air cleaner at all.

Any remendations on what i should put on mine!
Any good 14" low-profile type air cleaner will work. K&N filter element for higher flow and washability.

i am glad you posted that. i had the Edelbrock version till i saw the picture. now i am back to the circular K&N that i had before!

As said ... any good 14" assembly ... the factory assembly is just fine. As far as elements & flow ... go buy the cheapest store-brand paper element ... they flow more than the Big$ elements ... but do change em regularly. Do run the tallest element you can without the lid or wingnut hitting hood. We run cheapo 14x4 in our circle track car.

K&N 14" Extreme is the way to go

The factory is long gone. I will get one of those large tall papers, TKS!

The same thing happened to my 78. My brother tried to start the car one day in December of 95. It didn't start. So, he sprayed down the airfilter with STARTING FLUID and it still didn't start. It turned over, back fired and CAUGHT FIRE!!!

He figured the best way to put it out was to close the hood and WALK AWAY VERY QUICKLY!!!

Thankfully, only the airfilter and the EFI fuel injectors burnt up!!!!
