While the engine is at steady idle I imagine that the beltdriven A.I.R-pump creates a bad noise, almost like the bearings in it would be on its way to the afterlife.

Is this a possibillity? Is it common?

The pump seems to be stock and the car is my -88 Corvette.

Tobias,

My car's A.I.R. Pump was making noise for a while (about 3 months), and I thought that it was working ok; however, I got stuck in a traffic jam from hell (about 1/4 mile travelled in one hour) and when I finally got freed, the pump gave out and seized. A loud screeching noise came from the engine, and when I opened the hood the pump was not turning. I shut-off the engine, and I used a blunt pair of piers to cut the belt.

The moral of the story is -carry a sharp knife with the vehicle :L and get the pump replaced as soon as possible.

Okey, it´s a good possibillity that the pump is on it´s way. I´m going to remove the whole A.I.R system since it really isn´t needed.

Are there shorter belts to be used when deleting the AIR-pump?

hi there Doktor-t,
there are a air pump elimnator delte kits you can buy form ecklers, mid america motor works, corvette central or any other vette shop which comes with new shorter belt, new pulley with mounting bracket you can fit up your self with an hour!
frees up the engine bay and cleans it up so you can see & work on the engine a little better and you can also see the timing mark better too!
i got rid of my pump!
some say it can free up a little horsepower, but who knows that one!

air pump

Today I took my air-pump apart and it wasn´t really moving that freely like you would want to. I gutted it and lubricated the bearings. After re-assembly I moved much more freely and it didn´t create that much noise either.

The next step will be removing the rest of the A.I.R crap.
