One of my Pet Peaves is Checking Tire Pressure

The weekend of every month I have what I call "Free Air Day"
I check all my Families and Neighbors, the one's who want to of course, tires for them.

I can't impress upon people how very important it is to check them at least once a month.

Thanks for the link, i went right out and checked our cars. :thumb

Very Good, glad to help.Below,it's put in perspective.
Facts:

1) Under Inflated Tires decrease a vehicles MPG by 3.3%
with over 250 Million Non-Commercial vehicles citizens could save 5.0 billion gallons of fuel. That's roughly over 650,000 fuel transport trucks parked in line reaching from Seattle, WA to Key West,Florida and back.

2) 40,000-70,000 accidents occur each year die to under inflated tires.Over 30,000 of them results in injury. An estimated 660 deaths could have been prevented. That's the equivalent to the number of passengers and crew aboard 3-4 Boeing 727's crashing each year.

3) Under inflated tires increases green house gas emissions by 250 Lbs. per. automobile each year.Americans contribute 57.5 Billion extra pounds of CO2 per. year due to under inflated tires. That's equivalent to the weight of over 520,000 Elephants.

Mind boggling isn't it?

Great post, thanks. I had no idea tires expired, nor that the date was posted on the tire. I just bought 4 Kumhos from Tirerack and went out and looked - the code is 5207.
Not too shabby, the last week of 07. Now I'm gonna check the Jeep - GY MTR's also from TireRack, maybe 3-4 years ago.

Very interesting thanks for posting.
I wish some things had been more clear. They said several times that unused "new" tires over 6 years were dangerous. Does that mean that tires over 6 years that are driven on regularly and still have tread are ok? Whats "regularly" then?--How many miles per year whould be "safe"? At what point SHOULD you replace the tires? Thats of particular interest to Vette owners. Some like us average 5K per year ...or less.
Its interesting that the tire industry is fighting warning people. Who's $ loss would that be? You'd think that the tire industry would WANT you to replace tires every 6 years.
The last minute of the segment with the 6 year old tire from the same station from which that kid got killed seemed to indicate that the station would exchange the tire with the supplier/manufacturer. Maybe thats the problem? The manufacturer would lose the $?

In any case I'm getting nervous ....and will probably look at Hib's What's avaiable tire thread again! Darn it and I really like my Hoosiers and they dont make them anymore!

I reviewed the whole video after checking my tires. The tire spokesman said - basically - that the test specs were not up to date. Tire materials now are much better than earlier. I kinda agree with that. As usual the govt is often too little too late with "warnings". Even if my tires had been older I doubt I would've rushed out to replace them,
I'd like to find out if a more current test has been run. Possibly in Europe, they often have less red tape than we do and are more timely with critical info. Of course they also rush into judgement without thorough research. That's why I like to look at the actual facts and not accept other ppls conclusions.
I'm a D**k about that.
