Ok ..Well the dash in the 65 has been hangen out on 4 inch bolts now for a while...Oh..I guess about 4 months as I have been working on the wiring etc.

So last night after I got home from work around 8:30 pm I did a quick change and went out into the gee-rage. I decided to push the dash back in an bolt it back up. Since I have a Cp and just a drop light it really isn't that bright inside the car at night. As I was pondering other items on my too do list I was screwing in dash screws and tightening them down.

I was kinda tired and my mind was wandering here and their. Mostly their. As I was installing the upper left side screw.. I noticed that it seemed to slip in very easy..Hummmmmmmm..That felt funny... Heh...where did it go....I can't feel the screw head any more..

As I held the drop light over the screw hole..I didn't see the Phillips Screw head. Dam...where is it.... I know I stuck it in the hole and I know it didn't pop out. Then I spoted the screw head....several inches below the empty dash screw hole.....!!!!!!

Oh....F........NO...I PUSHED IT INTO THE TURN SIGNAL FLASH INDICATOR HOLE..!!
As I piered into the hole I could see the phillips screw head..F..!!!!!
Now what...!!!! So I reinstalled the 4 inch bolts and pulled the dash out again. Then I reached up behind the dash and poped the lamp out and jamed a "Q" tip into the hole and pushed....Out poped the screw....Oh Man..what a close one.

Now..I gotta get that little green disc back into place. It was sitting in the hole side ways. It had been pushed aside by the screw. I reached in with my small electronic pliers and managed to move it 3/4 of the way back. Then I did the "Q" Tip thing and pushed it back into final posistion.

Man...I was sweaten bullets..I'd hate to have to pull the dash apart to get the screw out as well as the little green lens.....

Stupid Stupid Stupid.......:r

If you want.. email me your phone number and I'll talk you thru the edit and you can do it...It's simple..:beer

You know how it goes.... Gotta do what ya gotta do to keep these cars on the road. :upthumbs

Mark - Where do you come up with this stuff? Some times I think you are sitting around next to a cooler filled with beer and and are thinking, 'what can I do to really screw with the guys on the forums minds? Either that or you need to give up working on the vette after a 'hard day' at the job.

Keep on truckin'.

don't worry Mark, I've done the same exact thing once last year when i was reintalling the IC on my car. glad I'm not the only one now.

ok, ok, i've never had the IC out myself on my car and never did that but I thought I'd try to make you feel better :beer

Here's one for you: Several years ago I took the dash cluster out of my '59 and re-painted it. Also drained and flushed the cooling system, and installed a new temp sender at the same time. Got the dash all back together and fired the motor up. Let it idle for few minutes and notice the temp gauge is not working. I re-check the wiring to the sending unit; it's fine. I re-tighten the wires on the back of the temp gauge; they seem fine.

What now ?!? I tap on the gauge a little bit and the needle moves just a little. I tap on the gauge a little harder and it moves a little more. Maybe it's stuck. So I tap on it quite hard ----- BAAMM !!!! The temp sending unit explodes and shoots up into to the top of the garage ceiling; I, of course, jump out of my pants. WHAT THE F*** is going on here !!!!!

After regaining my composure I shut down the car, retrieve the part of the sending unit from the garage ceiling and pick up the rest of the pieces scattered on the intacke manifold.

Turns out that when I tightened the little nuts on the back of the temp gauge I tightened them a LITTLE too much. There's a little tab inside the gauge and it rotated to ground out against the gauage itself greating a dead short to the sending unit. WHen I tapped on the gauge I guess it sent a jolt of voltage to the unit.

Just one of many, many stories of my adventures with my '59.
