I recently had our 97 in for a brake job because of steering vibration during braking. It has only 19,000 miles on it and I was very surprised (and disgusted) that I had to have the front rotors replaced because the dealer was unable to turn them. There was no problem with turning the back ones thank goodness. Is this a common problem or can I chalk it up the prior owner being a very hard and late braker? Also, this work was done about a month and a half ago and now I'm getting two idiot lights on for the abs and traction control along with two messages saying to service them both. Could the dealer have messed something up during the brake job? I'm taking it back in tomorrow 10/18 so they can do a diagnostic test. Can anyone give me a litte info to go in with so I'm not taken for a ride by the dealer? Thanks:hb P.S. Besides the dealer, is there a place to get an owners manual for my 97? The prior owner didn't have it.

Im taking a leap here but from my experience..

The dealer may have harmed the wheel speed sensor with would make the idiot light go on, on your dash. Be warned that you prbly do NOT have ABS right now. Usually with these systems when the computer detects a problem it usually bypasses the normal operating system.

(Also it is possible to warp rotors like that) Give me a car and a new set of brakes and if I try hard enough I can ruin them in a day NP. If you ride your brakes alot or drive with 2 feet its very possible.

Now the Traction control may be tied into the wheel speed sensor somehow. Im not experienced with electronic trac control (Only real 4x4's) <---With Trasfer Cases hehe

Another possibilty is the dealer reset your computer ? Who knows why? and didn't do it properly. (This can happen on Ford I know that)

Somebody will chime in Im sure! Im just taking a leap at it

HI there,
I would extract codes from the DIC, as if the ABS light comes on only after you start to drive, you most likely have a wheel speed sensor harness issue.
They have been known to wear, causing codes.
I would check to see if you have a c1225 or a c1226 in the 28-TCS system.
Please let us know what you have, and we can assist in this.

back from dealer

After going to the dealer I'm have to say that I'm becoming very unimpressed with the quality of this vehicle. The dealer told me that my problem is the left front speed sensor and the hub bearing. He stated that the part thru the dealer is $675 and another $125 to $150 to install. I am going to see if I can find it on the net somewhere cheaper(I'm sure that won't be a problem) Has anyone heard of this problem with the 97's, also could the dealer have damaged this during the brake job. They stated that it couldn't have been damaged by them, and unfortunately I wouldn't be able to prove it if they did. This car only has 20,000 miles on it. Can't GM make a car that won't fall apart when you pull it out of the driveway???????:mad

Hi there,
Did you extract codes from the DIC for the TCS system?????
I really would do that first, and then you can perform a simple test.
IF you have the codes that I think you have, then all you have to do is to exchange the left harness for the right one, if the code follows your exchange, then you have just diagnosed the wiring harness, not the sensor, because honestly, I do NOT believe that the sensor went bad.
I believe that the harness is worn.

codes

I don't know if this is the code that you are talking about or not, but on my invoice it a 522C diagnosis needs left front speed sensor and hub bearing. Below that there is a 318 CPC number. Are these the numbers I need or would the dealer have those numbers on there computer?

The codes that Paul (c4C5) is talking about are in the DIC or
D rivers I nformation C enter. C4C5 is a moderator so I am extremely confident that he will respond to you soon. By the way, he is well respected and knows his stuff!

HI there,
What you would like to do, is to reset all your messages on the instrument cluster, so you have a blank screen.
Yes, you can do this while your engine is running.
Now, push and hold down the #4 button and push the #1 button 4 times. Then release both buttons.
The codes will come fast, you are concerned with 28-TCS, and there will be codes.
Then, post the codes here, and we can tell you what you have, all the best, c4c5:hb

DIC codes

okay here we go with the codes. It did come up with the c1225 code under 28-tcs. Now what should I do? Did the dealer try to pull a fast one on me or does the code confirm what they said? I am very anxious to hear back from you on this headache. Any help you can provide will be a real life saver. Thanks Dave.. :s

vette manual

Thanks again for your help. When you replied about checking the DIC the first time, I thought you were talking about something the dealer was using because unfortunately we don't have a owners manual. The seller didn't have it, so we are in the process of obtaining one.....:beer

Hi there,
Your codes shows that there is a wheel speed variation with the left front wheel.
Basically, when it sees wheel speed at the other 3 wheels, and the left front doesnt match, this code sets for the wheel affected.
So, with that, before you dish $$$$$$$$ for the hub, and sensor assembly, I would simply do the following, if you are mechanically inclined.
Remove the left and right front wheel, There is a wire, that runs from the aluminum subframe, underneath the brake hose, to the wheel hub. You can disconnect the wire at both ends.
Simply change the wire from the left to the right, and when you set a code again, my guess is that you will see a 1226, for the right front.
If you just want to replace it, thats fine, as it only costs about $80.
They are the same for left and right, and I would say that for every 100 harnesses, I do 1 hub assembly.
The part is called a harness, for the left front wheel speed sensor.
Please keep us posted, c4c5:hb

dic codes

thanks c4c5 specialist!!!!! I'll try to get that done this weekend if I can. I'll let you know what becomes of all this, asap...thanks a bunch.....One more question. How could this slip by my dealer? Wouldn't this code have showed up on the diagnostic check? And if so, isn't there a routine check they should have followed or can I chalk this up to a unfamiliar mechanic? Also do you know of any service bulletin for this harness problem, since it sounds like you have had to fix quite a few?

Hi there,
Yes, i have done quite a few, however, I would chalk it up to unfamiliarity.
Yes, the test is unusual, however, it does work, and will give a definitive on the hub, or the harness being the cause of the problem.
