Just got a 98. A couple of days later the ABS and Traction Control lights came on in dash and Info center says service engine soon. Have a friend who has a scanner and he got two codes, P1571 and P1644. I have looked thru all of the posts and found one who had a problem similar to mine and have checked each sensor and they are all OK. Last night I disconnected my batery and will see if that might reset the computer. The closest Corvette Shop is about 100 miles from where I live. I like to as much as I can before taking it to anyone.

You can get the codes and reset them without a scantool.
Ignition on..
Clear DIC with RESET...
Press and hold OPTION and press FUEL 4 times fast...and you have them.

I have cleared all of the codes that have been stored. They were all (H) codes. The only thing that shows up that doesn't say "no codes" is: "28-TCS no comm" What is this???

28-TCS is traction control and ABS. That message means that everything is OK.
Is the light still on ??

Iff the light is on..check
The conectors from the wheel speed sensor, they sometimes are loose.

I have checked all of the sensors and the reconnected the plugs. The abs and tcs lights are on in the dash. In the diag. all codes are clear except in the 10 PCM. There are two codes there, P1571 H C, and P1644 H C. When the lights first showed up is when I took it to my friend who has the scanner and These two codes showed up then. After I got your post on how to read the codes, the 10 PCM only showed one code, P1626 H. Then I cleared all of the codes and then drove the car. When I ran the diag. again, The 10 PCM now shows two codes, P1571 H C, and P1644 H C and the 28 TCS shows no comm.

Those codes are set by the PCM. P1644.... The manual say Mis-routed harnes, Rubbed through wire insulation, Broken wire inside insulation. The same goes for code P1571. P1626 is Theft deterrent system fuel enable
I think c4c5 is neded here.

HI there,
The codes here are not as critical as your NO COMM. This shows that your ABS control computer is not talking to the rest of the control computers within the system. So the P1571 and the P1644 are both a result of this.
If memory serves, there will be a subcode which cannot be accessed with an aftermarket scan tool.
I would suggest that your ABS control computer is no longer any good, and it would need replacing.
Please keep us posted, c4c5

Thanks C4C5, I found that the plugin at the ebtcm had pieces of plastic in it from when someone had unplugged it and then must have forced it back together. I cleaned all of the pieces aou and then plugged it back together and all is OK. Thanks, Daryl (cwmoss)

Traction Control Error Msg

Hi c4c5,

Your guidance is always valued. I have a '97 and have been receiving a Traction Control error message, the Check Engine light goes on, and the vehicle runs very poorly (reduced power mode). Had a whole bunch of codes that I cleared and the problem went away, but then came back. Still receiving the P1571 code and one other (have to double-check). As you suggested, if I have to replace the ABS control computer, is that something I can do?

Thank you.

Hi c4c5,

Me again, with more data this time.

Took the car out and drove it around until the problem reappeared. Here's what I found:

Message: Service Traction System
Message: Reduced Engine Power
Light: Check Engine (indicator light comes on)
Light: Traction Control (indicator light comes one)

Error Codes:

P1125 H C (10-PCM)
P1281 H C (10-PCM)
P1571 H (10-PCM)
C1278 C (28-TCS) (Note: This code stayed on after I cleared all codes)

Any guidance is welcomed.

Thank you.

HI there,
First, your P1571 is not to be valued.
This is normal code in the PCM for all 1997 vehicles as long as it is H and NOT CURRENT.
Next, please recheck your P1281, as this is NOT a code listed in the GM database for the 1997 model year.
Now, the C1278 is byproduct of your P1125, this is only saying that the ABS.TCS has been disabled for another code set in another module.
So, concentrating on the P1125 is what you need to do.
This is for the drive by wire system for the engine.
It sees a fault and commands reduced engine power till it knows that the signals can be trusted.
So, first, make sure that all wiring along the fuel rail IS NOT touching or rubbing though.
This can be checked specifically at the back of the drivers side fuel rail crash bracket near the fire wall.
Let us know how you make out.
I will duplicate this response on the other site you have posted on.

This sounds a lot like the issue I ran into about 4 months after I bought my '98.

I'm trying to recall something that happened in 2004 so bear with me please.

The same thing happened to me one day while driving my Vette:

Message: Service Traction System
Message: Reduced Engine Power
Light: Check Engine (indicator light comes on)
Light: Traction Control (indicator light comes one)

If memory serves, my issue turned out to be a leftover effect of the old C5 leaking battery problem, whereas battery acid had seeped into the area behind the passenger side front tire fenderwall and was playing havoc with... I think it was the PCM and Tac module - maybe even the wiring harness.

Does that sound right, Paul?

My mechanic pulled the fenderwall, neutralized the entire area with baking soda, then cleaned everything as much as possible. He then coated everything with some type of plastic sealer to prevent further corrosion and I've not had any more problems with it (knock on wood).

And I took it to this mechanic for a second opinion after the dealership told me I needed to REPLACE the PCM and wiring harness to the tune of about $3400.

Like I said, this happened over 3 years ago and I didn't have any knowledge about pulling codes and such.

This may or may not relate to your issue but I thought I'd throw it in for discussion.

Good luck with it.

BTW - there is a thread here with detailed instructions on pulling codes on your C5 and a link to a source where one can look up the various codes.

Well . . .He lives . . .:w

(Havent see you around in a while, Merry Christmas P.)

Well, to refresh your memory, the place did in fact replace the ebcm (as you diagnosed, dont think he did anything about the bad ground you found on circut 556 though, but it did work fine for about six months) last year, but.....I'm getting the TCS lights on the dash again.

Cleared everything, they look like they are here to stay again.

Only code I have is:

TCS 1214 HC

Do I need to take the ebcm off and send it to Absfixer?

Thanks P.

Joe

Thank you C4C5 (as usual :-) )

Happy Healthy holidays to you and yours.

Traction System Problems

Hi c4c5,

Took a look at the wiring along the fuel rail and closely examined the area by the drivers side fuel rail crash bracket. I saw no apparent damage.

I also started the car and moved this wiring around a bit to generate an error message. This did not generate an error message.

Is there a next step?

Thank you.

Hi,

Experienced the problem again, and got the same codes plus one:

P1125 H C (10-PCM)
P1281 H C (10-PCM) - (double-checked and I get this code)
P1571 H (10-PCM)
C1278 C (28-TCS) (Note: This code stayed on after I cleared all codes)

PLUS:

38-RTD - NO COMM

Hate to be a bother. I appreciate you patience.

Thank you.

HI there,
Ok, this P1281 is reference to the APP or drive by wire system.
Here is what I suggest.
Based on this, split a piece of 5/16 fuel hose long ways with a razor blade and insulate that fuel rail crash bracket on the side where the wiring runs around it.
Cable tie it in place.
Clear all codes and road test and see if the light comes back.
Just note, sometimes, the wiring will look PERFECT but still ground out.
Allthebest, c4c5
