I have read somewhere that R-401 refridgerant will work in place of R-12, does anyone know if this is correct? It's for my 72 LT1.

Thanks

Mike

Per the EPA web site, http://www.epa.gov/spdpublc/snap/refrigerants/macssubs.html, R-401a and R-401b have not yet been approved for automotive use as a replacement for R-12.

One other thought, any refregrent can replace R-12 (just evac system, flush, change o-rings if necessary, and recharge) but NONE of the refregrents can legaly be mixed with R-12. So a lot depends upon what "works in place of" means.

My Uncle owns a HVAC company here in Chicago, he stated that there is also a comaptable "blend" R-414a and R-414b. I have not looked into these yet. I am just starting my search for some 30lb tanks of R-12

If your 'vette is the older VIR system, R-414b will not work for long because the R-22 component of the refrigerant will leak out unless you have recently replaced the rubber refrigerant lines.

R-409b works the best, but it's hard to get. I use R-409b in my VIR '77; it'll freeze your butt--works much better than R-12.

R-134a works well, but makes the condenser run hotter due to the higher head pressure. Overheating problems could suddenly occur because of it.
