Well what a shock I just got. I live in the Garden ("Tax The S*** Out Of You..) State. Where car insurance is the highest in the land and The Emmission Nazi's are getting out of control.

My 86 is equiped with a Carrolle Supper Charger which is 50 state leagal and has been on the car for the last 7 years or so. The only other item is a recurved computer chip and a high pressure fuel pump regulator.

The motor is stock and no emmission devices have been tampered with. The car runs clean and does not burn oil or smoke. The fuel filter and emmission matainence has been kept up . The car idols like a dream and cruzes nice and smooth.

The Vette only has 59,000 miles and is a clean running car. So Today it failed for hi CO% which was a tad over the spec of .050. My reading was .86 Frome what the shop told me I went too...( I don't go to the states place)..the State of NJ has lowered the emmission spec and made it even tighter.

So.. Now I have to try and find a stock chip for my car which I have found to be very hard to do since I don't have the original one. The guys at the shop told me to replace the stock chip to see if that would help.

The emmission test is done at 2400 rpm "off" the dyno for my car as it is rated as a low milage vehicle and he feels that the fuel cure is different at that speed.

Anyway the GM dealers have told me that there are abiut 10 15 different chips for 1986. So what is the critiera for determining the correct chip for my car..

Man...am I ****ed or what...it cost me $60.00 for a failed inspection.. now I have 45 days to fix tthe problem ...an Ideas...:mad :mad :r

Did you drive her at least 20 miles before you tested?

No I didn't.... I Went from the garage to the shop and then warmed the car for about 10 min ... at 1500 -2000rpm's. The shop is about 2 miles away.....

There are quite a few "chips", for the '86 especially, with the alum and cast heads. The MEMCAL is what most of us think of when we say "chip." There are two parts of the MEMCAL, the actual chip (Amtel 27C128) that has the computers program on it, and the NETRES or network resistor. This part controls things like limp home mode, the gear ratio, Electronic Spark Timing, and the knock sensor. The main difference in the MEMCAL's are the NETRES portion, due to gear differences. If you post your ratio I will look up the part number. I got a replacement from GMpartsdirect.com for $48 I think it was.

74BigBlock has a good point. From what I've heard anytime you go to have an emmisions inspection make sure the car is "good and warm."

Here are the EPROMS listed for the '86 Vette. You will have to go through and find the one that matches all of the RPO codes for your car to find out which one you need. Some are easy enough ... GM1, G44, Y07 is a coupe, Y67 is a Vert (I think) ... others are more difficult .... MH5 & MK2 are both manual trans (I didn't know there was a difference in the manual trannies) ... KB2, NM8, and VE1 I have no idea what are.

Y07 A/Trans (MD8) 2.59R (GM1), KB2, FED = GM/AC Delco P/N 1227942

Y07 M/Trans (MK2) 3.07R (G44), KB2, (Exc VD1 Export) = GM/AC Delco P/N 1227943

Y07 M/Trans (MH5) 3.07R (G44), KB2, FED = GM/AC Delco P/N 1227943

Y07 A/Trans (MD8) 3.07R (G44) (Exc Export NM8, VE1) = GM/AC Delco P/N 1227944

Y07 A/Trans (MD8) 2.59R (GM1), 2.73R (GU2), FED (Exc KB2) = GM/AC Delco P/N 1228107

Y07 A/Trans (MD8) 3.07R, FED (NA5) (Exc KB2, NM8, VE1 Export) = GM/AC Delco P/N 1228109

Y07 M/Trans (MK2) 3.07R, FED = GM/AC Delco P/N 1228473

Y07 M/Trans (MH5) 3.07R (G44) (Exc KB2) = GM/AC Delco P/N 16063919

Y67, MD8, 2.73R (GU2), 3.07R (G44) (Exc KB2, Export) = GM/AC Delco P/N 1228109

Y67, M/Trans (MK2), 3.07R (G44) (Exc KB2, Export) = GM/AC Delco P/N 1228473

Hope this helps.

Thanks Hrtbeat.... So all I need is the diff ratio...??? I guess the code would be stamped on the bottom edge of the diff.... Is that where it is located??

yeah having a nice warm motor will possably help pass, emissions like engines at 200 plus, but who wants that? i have heard hotter motors burn the gas more? 59K when was last time for a tune up? never know it could help. mines coming up in Oct here in Maryland which is done by the state and only cost $15 bucks with a cost limit to get it to pass.

Yea there should be one stamped from Dana on the bottom of the Diff. The easier way would be to find your RPO code list (center console lid, rear compartment lid, they seemed to move them around.)

Boy, I don't miss those inspections. :ugh NJ has been getting worse and worse; try historic plates, thats what I did with my Ole Yellow Truck back when I was in Trenton. :W

The Last tune up was at 40,000... And that consisted of new plugs and wires and cap and rotor. Also the fuel filter was changed for the second time(Interval every 20K)...

The motor has an MSD 6AL box and HEI Hi Output 45KV Coil. Like I said... It's a clean smooth running motor.

Here in NJ ..Inspection is free... Untill you fail then your on your own to get it fixed at an autorized Emissions repair facility. Or...you can go to a Serevice shop or stataion ..for inspection. Thet can only charge you 50% of there labor
rate per year....In other words..$60.00 P/ Hr Divided by 2= $30.00 X 2=$60.00 For 2 years.

What gets me is for 19 years this car has been fine...now 2 years and 6000 miles later it's a polluter villified by the Fed's....

Never mind all the other crap in the air ..there just worried about my 0.86 CO% Emission

you really gotta drive it. exhaust doesn't get that hot unless the engine is under load. a hotter exhaust will heat the cats more and make them more effective. That is probably all you really need to do.

Does this mean they 86'd your 86? :confused
:L

Yep...Them Son's a Bit-hes..86'd my 86.....:r

I don't know what the shop charges for testing, but it might be a good idea to drive it a bit and then have it tested there before buying a replacement chip.

Good Luck!!

Point taken..but I never had to run the s_it out if it before to pass....Just heat her up and run er over to get inspected. It's the damm fed's droping the CO rating to force us off the road...

How much lower do you think they'll go before Corvette's and other classic's start droping like flyes...Think About it.... If they drop the CO pass Level again.....how many of you think your car will pass?? Just wait till your next inspection....Sortta like Russian Roulette... :ugh

Don't you just have to pass emissions for that year? Say you own an 86, don't you just have to be within the limits of what was set in 1986? I would have no clue since IN doesn't do emissions testings :D

Ok Hrtbeat,
In doing research I found the part No. I need ..except it's no longer made...This is for an Iron Head 4+3.. 86 Corvette #122943

According to my source... the only info needed is weather or not it is Manual trans or Auto. The auto trans has 2 part numbers and the manual only one....

But there are 2 different chips one for the manual Iron Head and one for Manual Alum head.

So the one listed above is the epromp I need for my 4+3 Manual Iron Head.

I thought after so many years you didn't have to have the cars tested???

I would think the car would be worse with a stock chip back in. Did you have the car dyno tuned?

Do to the addition of the Supercharger... The Fuel Map I'm guessing in the eprom is a little more aggressive in the 2400 rpm range. More fuel more Co's....:beer

I thought of that but your car has to be 25+ years old.....:beer
