I've got a 64 327/365 (conversion) and the correct air cleaner to fit my Holley 2818 is on backorder until July/August. Since the old dual snorkle air cleaner base won't fit the holley, I'm looking for suggestions on a "cheap" substitute air cleaner that will fit under the stock hood. More specifially for those who have been there, how much of a drop do I need on the base assuming a 2" (or 3") filter.

Thanks.

Would a 66-67 air cleaner assembly work? I can get one of those pretty cheap (comparitively).

That should work - all '66-'67 small-blocks used Holleys, and used the same rear crankcase vent tube/hose setup to the air cleaner. :)

Thanks John. That's the info on the crankcase vent I wasn't sure of.
Found a cheap "Made in China" replacement 66/67 air cleaner assembly for $65. Guess that will do until I can get the correct assembly. It has the tube for the crankcase vent. I still will have to put a small nipple in it for the choke clean air tube, but that should be easy.

Those assemblies can be had on EBay for ~$25.00. This one is from Edelbrock and a wee bit more expensive. I used the GM top and the Edelbrock base to clear the electric choke. The Holley base does not clear. The K&N filter is 2" rather than 3" to give me hood clearance.

On the crankcase vent, the aftermarket metal snout on the base is smaller than the GM rubber hose. So I pulled a Bubba. If you look closely there is a small hose section friction fitting within the GM hose section. Not pretty but it is functional.

the elec choke clearence should not be an issue with his 2818, but it is a valuable point, since my SHP air cleaner would not sit on top of the Holley Street Avenger carb the p.o. put on the car without using a spacer to clear the elec choke unit . . .

Got my 66-67 type "Made in Taiwan" drop base "temporary" air cleaner. The only slight interference issue I have is with the PCV hose from the oil fill tube to the side of the carb. With the drop base installed, it pushes the PVC hose down and interferes with the accelerator pump linkage. Until I get the correct air cleaner assembly, I'll make up a metal tube to go most of the distance. Also have to put a small nipple on the base for the choke clean air tube. Otherwise, no issues with the choke (I've got the stock setup) or anything else. The crankcase vent tube lined up perfectly.
