A couple months ago I replace my A/C systems with a R134, no-VIR type system, use the VIR Elimator kit, Well yesterday I finally go the system charged and everything was going great, but then I saw a larger puff of smoke come from the Compressor, everything was fine for a while the A/C was blowing cold air but after about 15 minutes the Comprersser cluch started to make lots of noise so I have to un plug the compressor, My questions is can I replace the cluch or do I have to get a whole new compressor that means empty the system and the a recharge. If I have to get a new compressor can any one recommend a brand of type so I don't have this problem again? Thanks

OKIE, try and trun the clutch by hand(with power off) this will verify the compressor isnt frozen up. a coomon problem that occurs.if the compressor is ok then yes you can replace the clutch . measure the gap between the clutch and comp. you'll need a clutch removal tool and a installation tool. just remember that gap when reinstalling.
i'd check with auto parts store about renting the tools so you don't have to buy them

best to all

Thanks Robin, I think this is what I will try. When you replace the clucth do that mean you have to recharge the system also?

OKIE, you don't have to recharge. you're only removing the clutch from the shaft. there is a seal on the compressor shaft, behind the clutch assembly.
good luck.
