Looking to monitor my engine ecu and chart it before starting modifcations, mostly bolt on and 3:73 gears. Has anyone used and can recomend the software, usb input and I am running vista which always seems to be a problem. I do have another pre vista lap top if there could be problems,

Thanks,

I'm unaware of any software which runs on a PC, supports pre-96 ECMs and connects to the DLC (ALDL) via USB.

There is some very good software called "Datamaster" which is published by TTS which supports most of the pre-96 systems on Corvette, however, it requires a USB-to-serial port adapter and not just any adapter can be used. You have to use either one made by Belkin or another made by FTDI the "US232B".

I run Datamaster on an Acer running XP and I use the FTDI adapter. The software works great. I've connected my 95 with that set-up.

He has an adapter (APU1 w/ USB) that comes with free software (TunerPro). The APU1 can datalog, and burn chips, if you desire. It is designed for OBD-l vehicles. I use it on my 87 IROC and 92 LT1, it works great. I am running it on XP, but it may work on Vista. Getting everything set-up is kind of challenging, but it is not too difficult.

Use the oldest laptop you can pref with Win 98.Vista has problem with the USB drivers required to simulate a serial port

ALDL cable from here
ALDL OBD1 OBD cable OBDI OBD2 engine codes

If all you only want to do is datalog and monitor engine functions all you need is the cable and this program

TunerProRT from here Real time datalogging
TunerPro and TunerPro RT - Professional Automobile Tuning Software

Download the program and then get two definition files relevent to your car here (ECM 1227165 / Mask ID $32 )
TunerPro and TunerPro RT - Professional Automobile Tuning Software

When you get serious about wanting to adjust the tune you can buy this $175 unit which using the the TunerPro RT program allows you to do real time adjustments as you drive with out removing and reprogramming a chip

Thank you. Installing headers, high flow cats, and a B B exhaust. Fuel pressure reg and bumping it up 4-5 pounds. Installing alll new injectors except cold start. Removing air pump and associated parts. I have noticed Mid Americas has 2 types of y pipes coming off of the headers, one with cats and one without. Is it a good idea to use the pipe without cats since I still have the main cat. Or would I get better flow using the 2 in the y pipe and none in main pipe, or none at all. I think it would be agood idea to have a base line of what is happening now and what the sensors will be telling me after all is said and done.

Depending on the type of header system you are going to use, you may have to switch your single wire O2 sensor to a heated type (3 or 4 wire type). If you have to do this, I would recommend a 4 wire because they are more common than the old 3 wire, hence cheaper.

I would retain the cats if at all possible. The exhaust smells terrible without them, plus we should be eco-conscience.

Run a single Hi flow cat on the main pipe

I STRONGLY recommend hot coated headers for many reasons, including lowering the underhood temps, saving damage to all those plastic connectors, plus they look and work better; last longer.

I'd be cautious about raising the fuel pressure. The ECM tries to maintain optimum A/F ratio, which at any snapshot is X amount of fuel for the amount of air entering. If you raise the pressure, the ECM will lower the pulse width to maintain the optimum ratio, IF it can (within its authority to do so). Else, the car will run rich. Similarly, if you get more air flowing, it'll need more fuel.

The ECM may be able to accommodate the exhaust change, but I like to reset it and let it relearn.

Contrary to popular belief, the ECM's (especially the older ones: OBD-l) learning window is fairly narrow. With the exception of aging parts and sensors (within reason), the ECM should be retuned for any mods performed, in my opinion.

thanks for the information, sent for the cable and will be doing some monitoring for a while before and after any modifications. Still trying to get as much info on on the OBD-1, ECM Moduel and sensors, and understand how and what each one does and effects the other. I have a good basic back ground with engines prior to the computer days. I have no problem with prom's and computers, been burning chips back when cell phones used them. Does any one know of good articles about this stuff.

Thanks again,

There is some good information over there.

I'm using datamaster and tuner pro. I also use innovates LM-1.
