I have a pertronix ignition in my '73 so I have a direct 12v from the batt to the pos side of the coil when the key is on. Recently, I accidently left the key on overnight and now the alt gauge doesn't seem to be working correctly. System is charging but what could cause the gauge to not work properly or could it just be my imagination?

Probably a coincidence - the battery gauge isn't part of the charging system; it just senses voltage at the screw terminal buss on the horn relay and at the big battery cable stud on the starter solenoid and displays the voltage difference between those two points as an indication of current flow TO or FROM the battery.

I've also ran a wire directly from my battery to the HEI distributor. Not sure why the previous owner did it this way. He connected it to a toggle switch.

You said it looks at the voltage at the horn relay. Where is that located. My gauge is setting to the far left indicating no charge. I also know my horn doesn't work. The connectors on the horn in the rear of the car are rusted apart. Could this be causing the amp gauge not to work?
