I took the carb off the Vette and she looked clean as a whistle! Underneath that I saw some shiny aluminum lookin metal! After a little DW40 around the edges it got slightly better and looked kinda nice!

My question is, aside from calling the previous owner of the previous owner, how can I tell if the intake is stock? Is it going to have a GM logo somwhere or Chevy? The top of the intake where the carb joins has 4 seperate chambers w/ 2 being larger thatn the others. Ive been looking at intakes in Scoggins and Summit but havent seen any ringers yet. Is there a usual spot where manufacturer names are put? I didnt have time to give a good look at her and its pretty dirty in there. It looks like a rat built itself a home when it was sitting there! Ahhhhh.:t .......:mad
When I get home Ill give her a better look

The intake and the carb look way too good to be the stock stuff. I think the guy put on a new Q-jet intake and possibly a cam. Is regular idle supposed to shake you a little in yer seat? It seems to be kinda rough and choppy in a good way. I guess thats what is described as "lope"? Ill geta definite answer on the idle tomorrow when I put the carb back on. Aside from opening the engine up, how can I identify that as well.

All in all it seems like some nice little surprises! Any help in identifying this stuff when I get home would be appreciated.

there should be a casting P/N near the distributor and it should have GM casted on too.

I looked everywhere on the manifold for something and NADA! No manufacturer name. It says : Firing Order adn some numbers and theres a big A and the number 8 below it. No GM casting number or logo.

Im going to try and get in contact w/ the previous previous owner.

Yeah, that would help please. Ive stilll been looking and NADA! Cant see anything that would identify it.

In 1980 Chevy DID install a factory aluminum intake with a Rochester Quadrajet carb on the Vette. The only part number I could come up with is #14014432. Most of my part # books are for big blocks, so I can't help much on numbers. I can tell you that most AFTERMARKET manifolds DO NOT have the firing order stamped on them. So there's a good chance that is a factory manifold.

Aluminum Intake? Maybe A Cam Too?

The OEM intake for 1980 305 & 350 has a p/n 14014474.

I have the orig. intake and the part # that is on my intake is 14014432

Aluminum Intake? Maybe A Cam Too?

The number 14014432 is the casting number its always numbers off of the p/n. The number i gave is 14014474 is out of the dealers parts book dated 5/80.

that makes sense.
I think macgyver was looking for some kind of ID for his intake, and a cast # would be on the intake, the cast #s are the same for the MY 80 right?

Aluminum Intake? Maybe A Cam Too?

You are right he probably wanted the casting number but he said P/N and i just got out my book and gave him what he asked for. Asking for the casting # or the P/N needs to be noted. Just trying to help out. I usually go by P/N first and casting # second.

Sorry about that Ive been busy puzzling over the carb the past few days.

I think it does say pn and a number somwhere but I ll have to check again. Originally what I was looking for was some identification of a manufacturer stamp onit or log. It does say firing order on it though. Ill look for the number w/ it and see if its like the one you gave me. Thanks a lot redvett and silver 80 for the help I appreciate it.

Ill ask the expert tomorrow when he sets the Qjet straight if he can identify it for me.

thanks again

20+ years ago, my buddy wanted to build a stock-looking-but 350 HP motor for his '80 Z28. He found an aluminum intake from a late-'70s/early-'80s L-82, which we ended-up using.
He figured under all of the 'still-there', but disconnected emmision crap, nobody would realize it wasn't his stock, cast iron intake.
I think it has raised aluminum 'cross-hatched ribs' (?) in front of, and/or behind the carb pad.
I don't think it had the typical, earlier 'W'-and-'snowflake' cast into it.....

Aluminum Intake? Maybe A Cam Too?

GM used Winters as a casting vender for many years but in the late 70s used other venders so the snow flake might not be there. The casting # probably right. If your not trying to make the car a NCRS 100% than it really does not matter.

Thanks!
I'd thought for 25+ years the 'W' & 'snowflake' was a Winters Foundry marking, but recently, somebody tried telling me different...
