ammeter question 1964

i haven't started troubleshooting yet but maybe someone can steer me in the right direction; my ammeter oscillates very fast when driving along and will only stay steady when i put a load on like the a/c fan. any ideas? thanks

First thing I'd go after is the voltage regulator.

I agree with John. It sounds like the contacts on the voltage regulator are making and breaking (buzzing) quickly causing the needle to oscillate.

Thanks; thats where i was going to start. just trying to locate a 1/4 ohm 25 watt resistor to test with as shown in shop manual.

found the problem; had a replacement regulator, solid state; after drilling off cover, found blown off capacitor laying in case.
