I was at the Seattle car show this past weekend and stopped by this booth representing Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oil.

They claim you only have to change your oil once a year.

Has anyone ever heard of or used Amsoil in the C5. What are you experiences?

Yes sir. I have, and still do, and will continue to do so. It exceeds all mfr. standards. It is a PURE synthetic unlike Mobil one. So it will still function at high temps, and will actually increase your mileage and to some degree more power. In my judgement, it is the best.:_rock

First of all almost EVERY manufacturer will tell you that the bottom line is: change your oil at least once per year, almost REGARDLESS of mileage. (1500 to 25,000 miles!!)

I think that a ONCE per year oil change is the real kicker ! This is where it becomes a bit dicey. The recommended upper range for the C-5 Corvette Z06 is 15,000 miles. I am told also that 10,000 miles is the other upper range for C-5 Corvettes. The recommended upper range for Amsoil is 25,000 miles. If what I read of Corvette owners posts are any indication, MOST Vette owners DO NOT change their oil in accordance with the DIC.(10,000 to 15,000 miles max.) i.e. they change it FAR earlier, 1500 miles to 5000 miles. LET ALONE go 25,000 miles in a year between oil changes.

For me, I tend to change oil IAW the DIC and that puts it at 13-14.5k miles. This is coincidently app ONCE per year.

So if most "higher" mileage corvettes see 10,000-15,000 miles per year and if "bang for the buck" is a concern, while Amsoil, Redline are great oils, (5.95 and 7.95 per qt respectively) I continue to use Mobil One (3.67 qt)

In the extreme case that you see 25,000 miles per year and want to change oil only once a yr, I without hesitation would switch to Amsoil and or Redline. If you dont, to me the decision is whether that excess marketing hype is worth it.

Hello Ruking,
I believe we've corresponded on another forum on this subject!
welcome to this forum...

I changed to Redline during the summer because I have a high mileage 2000 coupe(69000). I changed from the Mobil 1 because Redline claimed that the car would run cooler. Well we drove from Chicago to Cape Cod and then nonstop back and the car never ran cooler at all. I change my oil every 5000 miles and since using the Redline have changed back to Mobil 1. Never have had an oil problem and can't see spending 7.95 a quart when one of their selling points never existed for me.

Synthetic Oil

Right here on this site is an excellent article written by Jim Ingle of GM powertrain that discusses lubrication. He has an interesting philosophy for changing the lubricants, once a season and there are four seasons as you know.

You can find the article under Knowledgebase tab and choosing 84-96 Corvettes > then Engine Mechanical > select last article Synthetic Oil Use.

The only thing I can add about the product is what I've seen and experienced. Using Mobil 1 if and when the engine has to be opened up, it looks near new well beyond 100K. I'm not sure what Amsoil is suppose to look like, but I have a friend who has a 95' that uses Amsoil and one day while looking things over in the engine compartment the filler cap was removed and I looked in and noticed that the valves and springs had like a milky yellow coating all over them, when I looked at my 93 with Mobil 1 in it, it looks lubricated wet but no film and appears like a new engine components. In my unqualified opinion I prefer that mine looks like mine and not what I saw in the 95. Oh both have about the same miles.

I change my oil every 2500-3500 miles regardless of what the oil manufactures say. Why take a chance with your Vette or other car for that matter.
