I am going to assume this issue will be expensive! This car has side pipes and when we start her, she "spits" a combination of water/moisture and black soot from the driver side pipe. Not much, but noticible on the driveway.

That's not unusual - when condensation accumulates in the pipes, it's blown out when you start it up, although you should see some from both sides.

It could be as simple as a low spot in the left exhaust system that is trapping more moisture than the right.

Since you don't say you get any water out the left side, then your heat riser is closed when you start it up cold. Need to check it to make sure it opens when the engine has warmed up. Otherwise the right side exhaust will be forced thru the intake manifold to the left side which is a restriction and keeps the carb too hot.
