Daytona Beach, FL - Just as Daytona International Speedway was preparing to host its first NASCAR race day since the pot-hole plagued Daytona 500 in February, it faced a startling reality.
It's deja vu all over again.
DIS released a statement early Friday morning indicating a section of the track approximately one-foot by 4 1/2-foot was repaired in Turn 2 as a "precautionary measure" following the conclusion of Thursday's track activity. The problem was discovered by an inspection of the track's team of engineers.
The new troubled section is located immediate adjacent to the area which required more than a 2 1/2-hour delay in the Daytona 500 to repair in February.
The DIS statement said track inspections would continue throughout the weekend and the track would make any other repairs deemed necessary.
DIS is preparing to host the Nationwide Series' Subway 250 on Friday night as well as Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series qualifying on Friday afternoon.
Word of another potential problem began leaking out early Thursday evening and at least one media outlet asked both track and NASCAR officials about the issue and the officials said they were not aware of a problem.
The Observer and ThatsRacin.com contacted a handful of drivers late Thursday but none were familiar with any potential problem in the area. The track, which was last paved in 1978, is scheduled for repaving which should begin following this weekend's track activity.
