I'm looking at a couple of nice 02's.Mileage 40-50.

Any known problems with this year Z?

Tammy (Ms. Schroder) owned a 2002 Z06 until she sold it earlier this year. She can probably some insights on what, if any, major issues she experienced during her ownership of the Corvette. Off the top of my head, I'm not recalling that she experienced any major problems.

By and large, the C5 model run was a great seven year stretch for the Corvette, and many "upgrades" got incorporated into the line up after 2001. 40K - 50K miles- so long as the Z06 has been well cared for- should not be an issue.

But if you're curious, you can certainly check the CAC's Knowledgebase and see if anything in particular grabs your attention as problematic.

Serious 2002 Z issues

I've had mine for almost a year and a half now. I daily drive it and have 45K on the clock.
All I can say is don't buy one if you can't stand the Permanent GRIN that tends to create wrinkles on your face!!!

My 02 is five years old now and only problem I had was a blown fuel injector (my fault). Other than that, not one problem. Most fun I've ever had!

I have read about an engine valve spring problem (breakage) that plagued many 01-02 and early 03 Z06's. Any comments about the issue.

I too am comtemplating purchasing a 03 Z06 to replace my 01 C5 with in next few weeks. I found a brand new (600 miles) 03 Torch Red Z06.

I have had my 2002 Z06 for over 3 years and I have not heard about any problems peculiar to the 2002 Z06. I have not heard any problems with valve springs on stock engines, either. Perhaps c4c5 will have information on this.

I had my 02 Z06 for 4 years, and never experienced any problems that were "particular" to the Z.

Some Z's in 01 and (some) early 02's reported higher than usual oil consumption.

Mine had an issue with the electronic traction and brake control module (computer), but this was not specific to Z06's. Mine also had a slight leak around the left rear axle- also common to other C5's. Both were fixed under extended warranty.

The only "issues" that I know of that are more common on Z06's are the way they chew up tires and deposit brake dust on your wheels. But, that's all just part of the fun

The 02 Z06 is an absolute DELIGHT. GET ONE!

Thanks soooo very much guys/gals for the rapid respnses and reassurances.

I was concerned because even though this vehicle has only 600mi (certified. Owner collects Corvettes and willling to part with one of his Z06's) I believe the 2003's only had the 3yr/36,000 warranty.
Still doing my research but let me know if 03's have/had the 5yr warranty.

I would have some concerns about this vehicle's inactivity. How can this car be safely started with all the engine parts so dry? Are any seals dried out? You get the idea. Cars do not like sitting unused.

That's the reason for the 600 miles. He would take his vehicles out every so often just the those very reasons. 200 miles a years is about how much I drove my Z28 Convertible without any problems and my present C5 only sees about 700-800 miles/year.

Actually I decided on a 2004 M Yellow Z06 with 2700 miles. I should take delivery tomorrow. I praying that it does arrive as planned.

That is an excellent choice! You won't regret it. I have about 45,000 miles on my '02 with very few problems. I autocross, drag race, and use it as a daily driver. I will own it for a long time. At least until I can afford a C6 Z06.

I love my C5(A4 2.73) but wasn't quite what I was looking for in terms of gut-enhancing raw driving.

That is the very reason that I traded my '97 A4 2.73 for my Z06.

Im not sure if its just me, but my shifter tends to be a bit sticky from 1st to 2nd. I think ive heard of this being a problem in some vettes. I also get a rattle when i turn off the engine, but that may be because i dont depress my clutch when i shut down the engine.

You can always get an extended warranty if you buy the car at a dealer. I think its well worth the price especially when you consider all the electronics and expensive parts in the vehicle.

If it makes you feel any better, you aren't alone in suffering the separation anxiety. Lots of CAC members live in areas where they have to store their Corvettes for the winter, and then live with posts the week of Christmas or Valentine's Day about what a great drive some member from Florida or southern California just had.

Just remember- you're reunion with your Vette will be sweet.

I can't speak to a sticky clutch between 1st and 2nd, but I can tell you that the rattle you speak of is entirely common, and holding in your clutch will solve it when you shut your engine down. C4C5Specialist has written numerous posts addressing that rattle.

How many miles?

I have tracked this problem a little and it seems confined largely to cars made in calander year 2002 (which is mine!)

The other BIG problem with the Z06s is the T56 trans. 2001-April 2003 had Aluminum shift forks which do not hold up to abuse. I just bought my car with 13k mi and it looks like I will have to rebuild it. I was very gentle for the brief time I have driven it.

Honestly, I like the c4 better right about now. I haven't experience permagrin yet with the C5. This car is very light and it will wheel hop if you give it gas. I just put some tires on it from the c4 days and that's when the trans went up.
