When 615hp and 590tq makes you yearn for more you are a very sick man indeed. Seek professional help!

I don't want more than 615/590 (Not Yet LOL) I want a bit more than the 450/460 I am getting now, and that motor would run/look great in the el camino. However, I would be close to 8K with a BG carb, and MSD, water pump, torque starter.

My first thought: I did not know you could buy a 4.25" bore small block and a 4.00" crank throw. I have to check this out.

My second thought: How are you going to get all that power to the pavement without breaking something?
I built a small block 400,,,I bored it 30 over...put in a crane roller cam,,,balenced it to the very tilt... then put on a eldabrock intake and a 850 quadrajet carb with .70 jets.... the only problem I had was I tore up the trany,, then the drive shaft,, then the axles went.... then I had problems with the tires slipping on the rims.... I don't know what horsepower I had but it was to much for the car...

They use dedicated blocks, raised deck, not GM blocks, they (mostly Motown and Dart) and are approx. 3 times stronger, are used, and have been for some years now in 427, 434, 454 Small blocks. Also aluminum blocks, but they get real expensive, over 4K for the block alone. I will try to find the article Hot Rod magazine did on big block cubes and power in a small block, they are quite popular, and common. Now the second part, you are correct. would need to (further) change trans internals drive shaft, u-joints, axels etc. That is where more $$$$$$$$ cost comes in. Opps, I edied this message cause I found a similar articale, less detailed than what I was reffering to, but same principal. http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/engine/113_0309_test/

these are GM's answer to making a 454 small block.

i've heard of guys that run 4.25" cranks with no problems and still use a big circle base cam. shipping is free since you can get it at any dealer. living in Alaska, shipping fees can eally add up. it'll be pretty sweet, keep us posted. you may also want to look at these for heads

Turbo 400 and the driveshaft should handle 750hp in reasonable shape

Rear drive drain is your weakness - and heat handling of course.

Keep in mind, you can have 12 TRILLION hp if you don't stupidly nail it with 5K clutch dumps or, for that matter, give it full throttle from a dead stop period. Even dragrace type rear diffs love to come apart with enough power at shock loads.

Does the 79 have the old style cast iron diff or was that the year they lightened it and added the torque arm thing? A lot of that, and how big a meats you modify it to take, will tell you whether you can expect to take judicious use of more than conventional big block power - meaning "30 punch" type stuff more than all out launches.
