Any tips on how to keep a P.S. Pump from squeaking?

I just replaced my pump about three weeks ago, now I notice If I really step on, it squeaks, tried a little WD-40 on the belt, which I also replaced, I have adjusted the belt about 6 times and still no luck any ideas what to try next?

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom.You said you just replaced the pump? After you filled the pump resevoir with fluid, try raising the tires off the ground and with the engine running turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and hold for a few seconds, then turn to the right and hold a few seconds.Do this about 3 times each.It lets the air that got in the lines escape back in the resevoir.Hopefully it will solve your problem. Also make sure your belt is adjusted properly.

Good luck........John

Dont spray the belt with oil it will make it slip more.to remove the oil from the belt spray it with aqua net hair spray.YES HAIR SPRAY

I will try both, it is driving me nuts.

Thanks,
Tom

I tried both suggestions, still squeaking, I might have to try to adjust the nut on the P.S. control valve, only thing left to do that I can think of.

If the steering doesn't pull to one side or the other with the engine running and the front wheels in the air, leave the centering adjustment alone - it won't affect the squeaking. Sounds like you need a fresh, clean belt and you need to clean the groove in the pulleys (and/or sand the groove lightly to make SURE it's clean) before installing the new belt. If that doesn't cure it, you've got a pump problem.

John,

Thanks for the ideas, i will try them tomorrow. I just hate to change the pump again, it is an all day job, or at least for me it is.

John,

I believe you are right about the belt, it seems to have stretched about 1/2 inch to long, there isn't enough adjustment in the braket to tighten it enough so I will try a new belt tomorrow.
