Just curious at average prices for all forged internals I am considering a 383,406 and 427

Got a quote from a local speed shop for 383 stroker with all forged internals for around 2200.seems pretty decent to me.Thoughts suggestions

$2200 is decent for a short block. are the internals 4340? internally balanced? 6.0 rods? it is easy to make a stroker motor cheap, but if your going for big power it needs to be right. unfortunately race prep is not cheap, so $2200 sounds iffy if you want to make to 500hp. can you get a list of all the internal components?? what are your power goals?? we can sort out your needs better with some more info and give you a closer idea of what you need. i have pretty good info on 383's and 406's, so ask away and hopefully i, or others on the forum, can answer your ?'s with better detail. hope this helps, Brian

Thanks Brian yes all the internals are 4130 It has flat top SRP pistons H Beem rods Hasting Greens Arp Fasteners Wheeler 4 Bolt main black with rings and bearins. It is internally balanced

sounds like a good deal. do they have sonic map and bob sheet for the balancing?? who's internal parts, is it Eagle, Scat, Etc?? SRP pistons are top of the line. just need to see what your goals are to fit parts for your application. i like 6.0 rods, most shops run 5.7 stock 350 rods on a 3.75 stroke crank for their 383's. the 6.0's give longer dwell time at both TDC and BDC. also the piston speed is increased mid stroke and the latteral "push" into the cylinder wall is reduced, all adding up to better volumetric eff. 5.7's work, 6.0's work better at an added cost. just check the deck height and see where the pistons are at TDC. things to be aware of are piston to valve clearence, valve relief/dish for compression ratio, quench height, cam selection and main bering clearences. let me know your power goals and we can start getting you a parts list together. Brian

I am presently scratch building a 406 for my 79 L82. Just getting back to hi-perf motors after a 35 year absence. I strongly suggest you spend a lot of time on reading and research before you spend a dime so you can make an informed decision about what you want. There are a lot of issues to resolve when dealing with these "hot" small block Chevys. You can spend a lot of money on only the best parts to get a really hot motor(1.25-1.5HP/cubic inch) but are you going to be satisfied with the driveability and cost to operate. For example,if the compression ratio is too high you will not be able to operate the motor on pump gas from your corner c-store. Do your homework, ask a lot of questions, then make you own informed decision.
