ARLINGTON - A 35-year-old man died this morning after losing control of his car and slamming into a tree in southwest Arlington overnight, police said.

Jerry Strickland was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette south on Business 287 about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when he came upon a slower moving vehicle and tried to pass on the right shoulder, traffic Sgt. Randy Reed said.

Strickland lost control of his car and swerved across the northbound lanes, and struck a large tree near Gertie Barrett Road, Reed said.

Strickland, of Mansfield, was transported by helicopter ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. He was pronounced dead at 5:39 a.m., according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office.

Investigators believe alcohol may have played a factor in the crash, Reed said.

Had a friend whose boyfriend was killed like that years ago. He was driving on a one lane road and a car stopped to turn left. He couldn't wait and went on the shoulder to pass the car. He lost control and when he got back on the road, hit a Mack truck type of vehicle head on. His Grand Am didn't stand a chance and he was killed instantly.

Even sadder was that he was on his way to see her. It was July 5 and they didn't watch the fireworks together the night before because they thought they would get another chance.

We were at work on July 5th when she talked about it. She said that he was supposed to stop by before she left for work but he never showed up and it wasn't like him to be late. Minutes later, her father walks in to tell her the news. Even though that happened years ago, I don't think she ever got over him or that incident.

Thats horrible...sory to hear that.....but you know what...you have to be a real F$&%#*^g ahole to pass like that on the right shoulder...now hes a dead F#$%&#%g ahole.......:W

That's a little harsh, he could have been on the way to the hospital or to pick up a sick child or some other emergency. I agree passing on the right is not a smart move but I'm not going to pass judgement on the actions of the deceased without knowing more. And he isn't going to tell us why he was in a hurry now.......

Sorry to hear it, a terrible story. But people should remember that high-performance cars, even though you feel invincible, can't always perform like we dream they can. I like to drive fast, yes, but please everyone be careful.
