Looking for some feedback from those of you who have been down this path. Am considering getting involved in autocrossing my pristine 48,000
mile 96 LT-4 coupe with base suspension. As a newbie to autocross I understand I will be unable to initially drive the car at the limit. Once the bug bites and it always does, I will throw some mods at the car to go faster I am sure.............. so does it make sense to autocross this car at all or would it be wiser to wait until funds are available and the market is right to sell the LT-4 and move up to say an 02 C5 Z06?

Part depends on if you want to race only against other C4's like in the NCCC sanctioned stuff. If you're looking for SCCA solo stuff, the C5 would be better. So, even with mods to the C4, the C5 Z06 will probably be faster and comes already for autocrossing. My recommendation is to trade to the Z06.

If the car is "pristine" and only has 48K...there is little point is destroying it. Cars at that age have MUCH greater resale value with that low of milege. If you are looking for a way to loosen a car up a bit....auto-crossing would be the quickest way outside of handing the keys to a drivers ed class.

To be competitive you'll make lots of modifications anyway, so why not do that to a car thats not so nice? There are PLENTY of late C4s out there that are cheap, skweek, rattle and have 150,000+ miles. The track is a great home for many of them.

Get a used C4 and do autocross on the cheap or get a C5 Z06, any C5 will be WAY better than any C4. I went down this road in a discussion with Hib Halverson, here on CAC. If funds are available get a Z06.
