As some of you know I've got a 1965 convt. 250hp, powerglide with fac. air. My vin#is 194675s120992, On the pad by the water pump I've got F0712HC , stamped smaller next to it is 120992, The number next ot the bell houseing is 3782870, intake manifold 3844457, exaust 3846559. Maybe its me but something doesent make since here. Thanks for any help. Roland

Are you sure of the "HC" in the F0712HC. No listing for HC in 65. There is an HG but it is the 375hp engine with manual. And there is an HO that is the 250hp auto.

Engine was built July 12th and your VIN is a July build. So that looks good.

The C looks right ,thats one of the things confusing me. Also when I looked up my vin# I came up with a june build date. When I bought this car I was told it was a matching numbers car so it will be interesting to see all the comments. Roland.

June production ended with 21216. So my previous statement about a July build is wrong. Your 20992 would have been a late June build. So the July 12th on the engine would be wrong for the cars build date.

What is the casting date on the block?

The HC code was used twice, first in 65 as a 327/275hp auto in the full size chevy and then in 69 as a 350/250hp manual in the A/F/X bodies.

"F0712HC" doesn't look right to me, either. The number should end in "HO" ("HC" was used in full-size Chevy's), so possibly you misread it or perhaps it is mis-stamped slightly.... but, what further puzzles me is that serial 120992 was built in late June, yet your engine was assembled July 12, which does not seem credible. I think the engine and frame were stamped very early in the assembly process. So, unless a very serious problem was found with the original engine before it left the factory, and a new engine was installed and stamped in a repair bay several weeks later, this engine/vehicle date combo isn't correct. There's no way to verify that, it's only a possible explanation that stretches credibility because it requires you to believe that 2 rare problems occurred (a bad engine and a mis-stamp), which is unlikely.

Exhaust manifold is correct, as is intake and block.

Have you checked the number stamped atop the left frame rail, in the vicinity of the rear upper shock mount, to see if it also contains the "120992" code?

I also believe that your VIN derivitive on the pad should read "5120992", not just 120992. Chuck

Thanks for all the replys guys. Ive told on another board that there is another date code on the block pasenger side rear by the bell housing , mine is G85 which would give me a july 8,1965 date for the block. The front pad being F0712HC (or what ever) seems to make since until you put the vin#194675S120992 into the mix. If this is a late June car could it have been taken off the line for a bad engine and by mid july put back in. What does not make since to me is if someone went to the trouble to find a block with the right numbers why miss it by a few weeks. Roland.

The casting date of July 8th with an engine build date of July 12th seems correct. Then it would have been installed in a car built the latter part of July. But since your VIN is for a late June build.....I'm lost.

Have you posted this info over on the NCRS board? They are the experts and could give you an honst estimate if the replacement engine theory could fly.

The conventional wisdom is that an engine could have been held back for heavy repair, but not an entire car.

There are many documented cases of engines with casting dates way outside of the normal '6 month before' time window, and cases of engines with really weird stamp pads that were 'fixed' at the factory, but I've never heard of a car being released with a component date later than the VIN date.

To be kind of blunt, if the seller simply said that the car was 'matching numbers', you got exactly that. If you assumed that he meant 'original engine installed on the assembly line' that's another kettle of fish.
