are you really working toward reaching your goal or just wasteing money on your current engine combo....
most of you gentelmen are falling into the most comon TRAP there is, limited thinking BASED on modifying the engine size and/or type that came from the factory in your car, or buying parts almost randomly as you get DEALS
yeah I know, it seems easier and cheaper and its far less intimidating if your not especially skilled, but in the long run it ALWAYS PAYS to think thinks thru in detail, as to what you REALLY want to have when your done, sure that l83,l98,LT4 with a few mods seems fast, but by the time you finish modifications youll have spent a good deal of money, and not have nearly the results , in hp/tq you hoped to get, that, that same money spent might have purchased
Ive seen many guys constantly throw parts/money, in an almost never ending repetative/cycle at their engine based on the stock engine block and in most cases heads, when a careful assessment, as to thier true goals would have saved them a great deal of money and effort and time, ESPECIALLY if they had built a seperate engine and installed that once it was complete, plus when it came time to sell the car they would not be giving THOUSANDS of DOLLARS in parts away they were getting little or no money FOR!
all Im saying here is THINK IT THRU CAREFULLY....if you want, a supercharger, you really need to build the engine to USE a supercharger, a big block,is usually cheaper in the long run if your goals are over 500hp N/A,or if your thinking about a twin turbo LS2, then don,t waste a good deal of money modifying your current engine, first. PLAN YOUR PATH/BUDGET AN ATTAIN YOUR TRUE GOAL!
theres 500 hp 383 engins
theres 720hp 572 engines
theres 505 hp aluminum engines ETC.

I see guys all the time who have dropped $5000,$8000 or more on mods, that have tried several cams, differant cylinder heads, several intakes ETC. they spent the money, yet have little to show for it!,YEAH! IM WELL aware that its far easier to spend $150,or $300 at a time, but THINK ABOUT WHAT YOULL HAVE, LATER!PLAN your mods, think it thru AND STICK TO THE PLAN!

very good food for thought. not to hijack your thread, but what are your thoughts on 496 bb (454 overbore w/stroker crank)? I am debating between something like this(already have 454) ofr simply buying 454 from gm

I had a 13.5:1 cpr crower injected 496 bbc in my 1968 vette and it was an awesome engine, I would not hesitate to almost duplicate that engine again today (but with a few upgrades)if my goal was to run strictly at the drags.
the 489 0r 496 stroker versions of the 454 can be a great way to pull extra power from a basic 454 combo. (btw have the block sonic tested before the cylinders bored as some blocks are thicker than others)
but Id point out that you can buy a short block from GM for both the 502 and 572 bbc engines, and you can sell your current shortblock , which could easily be the cheaper route to big displacement once you CORRECTLY figure all the parts and machine work that goes into a stroker bbc

Yes, Ive considered that but I'm hesitant about using an electric fuel pump, I had one on a 68 camaro years ago, and man that thing produced and annoying (to me at least) hum/buzz
any other info you could give me on a 496 build (for street only)?
thanks
mike

well first Id point out that some electric fuel pumps make a great deal more noise than others, you need to go to the track and ask around as to which models work best, with reasonable noise levels, and then, Id point out that place and method of mounting also has a huge effect on the noise levels, transmitted to the cars interior
vibrations need to be isolated, and careful thought used in the mounting process helps
mount the pump on thick rubber bushings to a small 3"x8" aluminum plate and use seperate bolts and rubber washers/bushings and screw the plate to the bottom of the frame with a foam rubber spacer between the plate and the frame.

Ill look up one of the combos Ive used for a killer street 496 bbc and post it shortly

giving it some thought I realized that I don,t know exactly what your other currently used components are, rear gear ratio, trans type? stall speed ?,car weight ?,which cylinder heads youll use ?or if your willing to change those?, intake manifold?, and are you willing to run a roller or solid lifter cam?
give me some Idea as to which parts youll tend to keep, on the 489-496 stroker and Ill see what can be changed/or reused, naturally re-useing as much as possiable to keep cost lower

Thanks for the time/input. I have the car in the paint shop, engine/trans at the mechanic. Due to hurricane havent had it apart yet. as soon as I find out i'll let you know
