Hey guys, How hard is it to replace the backup light switch on a '93 ZF 6spd? My dealer called (car was in for state inspection) and said I had no backup lights. Is this part expensive (some special german switch)?

Switch is somewhere around $35-50 if I remember right.

As for replacing, in the car, I think if you drop the exhaust it is easier to install. Never had to do it. I still have a new switch I never installed, in my case it was a bad connector.

Well, I did a search online and the switch is around $50. Had I known it was bad before taking it for inspection, I would have fixed it myself. The dealer charged me $88 for the switch and $100 labor. It's my own fault for not checking out the car before I took it in. Live and learn..

I've done this fix. You don't have to drop the exhaust. You can't do it with a regular wrench though. It takes one of those articulated ratcheting box wrenches. There's not enough room to fit a socket and ratchet up in there, and not enough room to turn a conventional box wrench.

The dealer got the part around 3:30pm and I was out the door by 4pm. I don't think he dropped the exhaust. I just finnally realized, when the mechanic brought my car around. The rear side markers lite up in reverse...Cool.... I've never seen them before. The car passed inspection for the passed 2 years., but I don't think they bothered to check them until now. Heck, my wife even noticed the light now!!! Go figure.
