I was talking to the owner of a 2002 coupe and he informed me that he had to have his engine replaced due to excessive oil use. He told me that there were certain serial numbered engines that exhibited this problem. I own a 2001 six speed coupe. Does anyone know anything about what years and/or serial numbers this effects?? Is this a potential problem for me? So far so good, I've had no problems.

Hey Dave,
I have heard about the problem, butI haven't come across anything that had serial numbers.
There is a TSB here in the Knowledgebase about it.

How many miles do you have on it?
It is my understanding that the problem manifests fairly early on.

majority of the Vettes affected/effected were 2001 Z06's

To the best of my knowledge it was 2001 Z06 engines (LS6) and the problem was one of chrome piston rings that failed to wear in. Generaly the problem was resolved by replacing the chrome rings with a softer ring and deglazing the cylinders.

Dave - It was my understanding that GM changed to lower tension piston rings on 2001 and some early 2002 Vettes to try and reduce friction between the pistons and cylinder walls. Some of these engine later developed oil consumption issues. I believe GM has issued a TSB on this problem and under certain conditions, GM will warranty the engine disassembly and ring replacement on those engines with excessive oil consumption. Not all engines have exibited these problems. GM reverted back to the higher tension rings in 2002 and later models because of this issue.

My '01 has about 13.5K miles on it. I just bought it this past July with 9.5K on it. I haven't sen any excessive oil usage on the car, then again, I don't drive it very hard.

Thank all of you for your comments!!

Dave

As I understand it, the oil use was associated with certain driving practices. High RPM low load conditions contributed to the oil use. People who drove around at 4000-5000 RPM had more trouble than those that drove around at 2000 RPM.
