black 81 corvette 4-speed
Well I got a dumb question.I am just now getting around to putting my engine back in my 81 w/4 speed,my question is what bolts attach the pressure plate to the flywheel?!! I have six bolts that are grade 5 that have a long shoulder on them and some grade 8 bolts that have no shoulder near the head of the bolts. Anybody have a clue wich bolts are correct? Blah I hate gettin old!!

Pressure plate bolts are 3/8"-16 x 1", with a plain shank 11/32" long below the head.

Trust me, that's not an age thing. I was doing the same sort of job you were not 3 months ago. I couldn't remember which bolts when where either. But I got lucky, because I had taken pictures for every single step (it was my first tranny job, I wanted it to be perfect ;)).

Next time, you might try putting bolts in a sandwich bag and label it. Works in my cluttered garage. Get it on the road ! Winter almost here.

hello, i've been doing the ZIP-LOCK bag thing on my project bikes for years. when disassembling i put them in marked bags. then after cleaning and/or repairing i put them in a new labeled bag.
then i try to box the parts according to assembly.this method does take longer to take apart. but i make up the time when putting together.

I line everything up in the order that I took things apart and try to put the bolts back in the holes that they came out of on sub assemblies. It saves a lot of guesswork, but occupies a lot of floor space. That way, all the assemblies go back to gether in the opposite order that they came apart, and all you have to do is grab parts and bolt them back on.
Robin,
We got the remenants of Francis today and lots of roads are flooded here. I can only imagine what it's like in Orlando. My sympathies. Hang on for Ivan!

I have a question. I thought you were supposed to use new bolts for the re-assembly? Doesn't a clutch/preassure plate kit come with new bolts, and aren't you supposed to use new flywheel bolts? I thought I saw that in the GM shop manuals that came with my 72?

I been tearing apart all sorts of gear for the longest time now...nearly 50 years, and all I do/did was toss ALL the bolts into a bucket, swish auto bolts around in some gasoline overnight, along with anything else that needed cleaning....blew them off when ready, and sorted out by type and count.....

depending, the count and size is the main clue as to what's where, also the appearance....never failed yet.....not once....

but you gotta clean them up and sort them into groups.....jeex, no other way....

I seen guys with baggies full of greasy bolts, and even clean ones with labels on them, and laugh.....sorry, mark of a amateur....

GENE

Gene, i find it interesting that you think bagging and tagging is for amatuers. i have 28 years of working at Disney, from autos, boats, rides and shows. the system works for me..
guess i'll have to change my classification from attractions mechanic to amatuer status
