Does anyone know the length of the positive battery cable on a '97. The dealer wanted 350.00 to replace it. I'm going to try and fix it myself if it's not too difficult. Any tips or advise would be appreciated.

The screw that secures the cable to the battery has been eaten away by battery acid to the point that it's about ready to snap.

I had a similar situation except the bolt that screws into the battery seized inside the battery. Broke the battery getting it out too. Battery was bad any way so that was no big deal. However I had to cut the bolt out of the battery mount (that broke loose from the battery) with a dremmel tool and it was no longer usable. Thought I was screwed with the messed up battery cable and was fretting about the possibility of having to replace it, but I found replacement bolts at Wal-Mart that worked perfectly. They were like $3 or so.:W

I did the same thing, got a replacement bolt at autozone for $5 cleaned the cable made sure it was in good shape and have not had any problems.

good luck

HI there,
GM also has the battery bolt separately.
Eitherway, make sure that the battery acid is completely cleaned off the battery cable. When you remove the cable bolt, slide the red cover up over the top of the terminal itself.
You will have straight access to the terminal to clean it.
