I'm having a little heat soak trouble. I have a heat shield on my solenoid but still have slow cranking. My positive battery cable is close to my exhaust. If I lengthen my cable to move away from the exhaust would that help or would the added resistance bring me back to the same problem. Thanks for your advice.:confused

The further you can route the cable away from the heat, the better; the higher the heat, the higher the resistance in the cable. What's more important is that the connections at both ends of both battery cables are clean and shiny for minimal resistance at those connections.

Whats the condition of the battery cable? Johns hit it right here. You would be supprised what a difference clean connection make. Also remove the cable and see what it feels like. When they are real stiff in spots it is useally because they are corroded inside.

Good luck and remember if your adding a longer cable your also increasing the resistance unless you step up a wire size.

Normally if its a good wire, and good conections and the cable is located properly.Starter is in proper repair,No other modifications are needed for proper operation. Hows the timming set? a couple degrees the wrong way make a warm start very diffacult and imbarassing

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to try a re-route tomorrow. Timing is great and ends are shiny. If I'm running a 4 ga. wire now is a 2 ga. available or just add a foot to my 4 ga.?

The bigger (smaller gauge number), the better. On my non-judged project cars (especially the ones with rear-mounted batteries), I use 1/0 welding cable - has hundreds of strands of fine copper wire, the lowest resistance cable you can buy - have NEVER had a cranking or low-voltage problem with any of them. Lots of parts-store battery cables have only a few strands of copper-plated aluminum conductor; they have high resistance, and they don't last.

Thanks JohnZ. I understand perfectly now. Thanks for your patience.:upthumbs
