Battery cables through the shield?

Are the battery cables supposed to run through the shield by the J bolt on the positive side of the battery? Can't seem to find an answer in any shop manuals. My repro cables seem awfully close to the manifold just hanging around.

Nope, it goes on the outside, and is held in place by a small plastic push-in tie. Check carefully, and you should find a small hole in the lower , left side of the shield , where the plastic tie is inserted.

I would have tied them down, but wanted to make sure there wasn't a more correct "cleaner" way to route them.
