The bearing went out on my belt tensioner (1986 convert). I was told I could just replace the bearing instead of the entire unit, is this true? If so, where is the best place to get the bearing? If not true, where is the best place to get the tensioner w/ bearing? Someone also told me the bolt holding on the tensioner is left hand thread, anyone know for sure? Thanks.

If you are talking about the bearing in the pully, yes you can replace that for about 4 bucks. Look in the yellow pages under bearings to locate a supplier. Remove the pully, I do think it is left handed thread, then remove the three bolts that hold the two halfs togther. Then tap out the bearing. Take the bearing with you to the supplier, their is a number on it.

I got a new bearing at Napa. The bearing is very easy to change, just remove the serpentine belt, and only a single bolt holds the tensioner arm to the engine. Then a single bolt holds the bearing cover onto the pulley. Press out the old one, press in the new one with a vise. Very easy.

Thanks

Thanks for the info, I'll try the bearing replacement. Much cheaper and why spend the extra $ if you don't have to.

GREETINGS,
I JUST READ THIS POST. COULD YOU GIVE ME THE BEARING NUMBER THAT YA GOT AT NAPA AS MY TENSIONER WAS MAKING A BIT OF NOISE LAST WEEK. ALSO, IS IT IN FACT A LEFT HANDED THREAD?.........YOU VCAN E-MAIL ME DIRECTLY AT ru2cme@cfl.rr.com.........THANKS!

Just got the car out of storage. Probably will be changing it out next week on a day off.

You can change the bearing but the tensioner does wear out after awhile. The spring eventually weakens and the serpentine belt will begin to slip. The tensioner is marked with notches on both the housing and the arm to show the relative strength of the spring.

The entire tensioner is removed with a single bolt so the replacement procedure is relatively simple.
