1991 ZO7 coupe, 6 speed,red on red w/most options!
hi there again guys,
how are you all.
at the moment i have a k&n performance air filter with open air box lid on my L98 1991 corvette engine.
i did bye some time ago buy a- a/o engineering front filter which sits in place of the front number plate but only brought the scoop and diffuser for the looks!

as there are so many types performance after market corvette filter systems available such as as the triple take air intake with the three round k&n filters @$249.99 from corvette central/mid emerica,

85-96 vortex rammer cold air intake system @ $279.95 from corvette central,

85-96 forced air induction system bye a/o engineering @$449.95 from ecklers or corvette central and finally the

bpp vortex rammer cold air system @$269.99 from ecklers.

what in your opiouns is the best performing air filter system available?

how much rough performance or horsepower can it give?

how much are they, if different to the ones i mentioned?

i guess i like the a/o engineering filter or the vortex rammer filter overall but not sure which would be better for perfomance gain?

any help and advice would be great!
thank so much guys!

r.e air filter mods!

hi there guys,
i was thinking now guys to save money as well for the air filter mod i could cover up and reseal the top of the open air box lid and then cut out hole of the bottom part of the air filter box and then cut out the hole of the radiator shroud to get the cold air in that way!

also add a big mouth air scoop which i orderred from ecklers a week ago any way!

do you think this will help and save money?

can i carefully mark out and cut the hole in the radiator shroud with the jigsaw while the shroud is in the car?

i was talking to the guys at t.p.i.s this morning and they said it would be better to do this mod rather waiste money on those other filter kits!

and apparently he was also saying that the filters only start getting the real power at higher speeds!

what do you think?

thanks for your time and reading.

Over the original K&N cut lid, the TRUE cold air inductions are worth about 5hp, certainly not worth the added expense.

SLPs is not a true CAI, as it draws air from the same place as stock, and its surface area is equal to the stock single filter.

Vortex Rammer is a cheap piece of plastic that warps rather soon after installation, which they have NOT fixed, despite what people tell you.

None of the true CAIs will produce a noticable difference in power until at high speeds, but even then its very minute.

I do have the SLP CAI for my year, which is a true CAI because it cuts a hole in the shroud, but it does not give power gains at all. I bought it only because my stock filter lid and housing are cracked and broken at the bolt joining them, so its a replacement for me.

Its a similar setup to your idea of homemade CAI, which I recommend you go ahead and do, otherwise do NOT waste your money.

I have had the Vortex Ram Air on my car for about two years now. I put it on right after I purchased the car and have loved it. I could feel a little harder pull from about 35 mph up. It is a definite improvement over the stock system in look and in performance I think. Look at ur stock housing. It has three fins on it that it "sucks" its air from. And what people also forget about the Ram Air is that it not only gets more air, but gets cooler air from underneath the car, not just cutting open the lid on the stock one and getting the hot air from the engine compartment. I would put it on my vette, and any other C4 I get if any in my future.

r.e best air filter mod!

hi there guys,
thanks for your info!
i was thinking i will just not worry about an aftermarket design filter set up like you said and just remodify my filter!
what i will do cover the top part of open air box filter part with new piece of aliminium , cut new hole at the bottom part of filter and also the radiator shroud and then add the big mouth lower front air scoop plus fit a 5-6" flexible diamater duct hose with mount bracket to the end of the k&n filter housing part and fit to lower part of big mouth scoop!

how does that sound?

thanks for your help guys!

What are you trying to accomplish?

If it's more power, the most you'll get out of that setup would be 5 bhp, if that, and only at higher speeds. Since the L98 is not a high revver anyway since it specializes in low end torque, you may get more satisfaction AND maybe even the same horsepower gain from a cat-back exhaust.

I have the same setup as your K&N/Open Top Lid, and quite frankly, I don't notice any difference except that I never have to change the air filter.

hi there rogue,
thanks for the reply!
i wanted to try and get more cold air into the engine thats all!
i found out that bye cutting hole in bottom of filter like i explained above i was going to do will suck more **** in the filter as the k&n filter that i have is designed for air entering in from the top, not the bottom!
so i am think now to just go ahead and buy the rest of the forced air induction kit instead and have the best of both words apart from the high expensive price though!
thanks
