I have an 02 Vert 6Spd with B&B PRT exhaust. I have read all the posts about the engine not being allowed to breathe right with the stock filter box. I do not race but would like to improve the performance and mileage. I have seen the Blackwing on Ebay for $254.00 and the K&N for about 245.00 and an RVM with 2 K&Ns joined at a "Y" connector, for about the same price. Is this just throwing away money because a stock syatem is good or what. ALL opinions please. Stay stock or what? :confused :w

The experts will jump in soon..... When I bought my 02 Coupe the 3 mods that everyone discussed was CAGS eliminate, Air Filter Breathing, Exhaust. I did the first 2. I went with K&N, not for HP gain, but to let the engine breathe better. As far as HP gain, 5- 7 ???

I have the Blackwing, and I am satisfied. Since you already have the Exhaust, you will see an increase in horsepower.(5 to 7 is about right). I have a SLP Loudmouth exhaust, Aftermarket MAF,and MAF Translator. I was able to increase the horse power about 25 at the rear wheel.

Air filters have no moving parts..

If I were you..I would consider buying a used Halltech T1 or Blackwing..(used usually means about half priced) The prices you mentioned new are higher than is available on the various forums for new products..

Make sure you get one thats built for a 2001 or newer.

Your car has a 4 inch maf vs the 1997 to 2000 3.5 inch version.

It should be worth about 15 hp..

A very good mod.

If you want an extra 10hp then go for a cold air system but beaware many are concerned with water issues .

Supposedly the twin filter unit you also mention creates turbulence in the maf and negatively affects the pcm's ability to properly read air flow so I would suggest passing on the dual cone filter you also mentioned.

This was one of the first mods eveyone I know recommended. I went with the Blackwing (around $210.00 new) filter and Ghl Quad Tips exhaust. I know there is a definite H.P. gain, but the torque increase is what i have noticed since i added these mods. Definite must have I.M.H.O.

Blackwing or Halltech. Both are highly recommended and seem to yield the two highest #s overall

Check Vararam Industries. I have their system and I am very pleased.

I have the Vararam too. It is hooked up to my Vortech supercharger. Nice looking unit.

For a low cost solution, consider a 2002 Z06 Air Filter box. It has a large hole in the front. If it is good enough for 405 HP LS6, it will do just fine on stock LS1. It's about $50 new.

Rain in a ram-type intake

I was looking at the vavaram intake for my car. How good is it at keeping water from getting in the intake? It does rain quite a bit here in Germany and that would be a concern for me.

Thanks

Contact Vararm. I believe they have something in the runner to stop water plus if you put the screens in from the ZO6 they help keep water out also. Vararam is a very nice product.

Dunno 'bout the Vararm/Vavarm system, so i cant say....Halltech and the Blackwing are two ive seen a lot of people recommend. the K&N system isnt bad, but the other two seem to be better

Call Vararam. You'll buy it after you talk to them.

my 5.7 cents....

can anybody really 'tell' the diff in 5-7 more HP?
or even 25 more hp?

Keep it stock,
keep the $'s in the pocket
(or make a larger contribution to the tire fund, clutch fund, maintenance fund, etc). Some day - you'll be glad you did.

I believe that Vararam advertises 17hp gain and even more once the car is at higher speeds where you can take advantage of the ram effect. There's only one way to really know though. Put one on and dyno your car.

The air filter mod is worth 13 to 17 rwhp and it can be felt. I highly recommend making one of them an option mod for your car.

Which one you choose doesnt really matter.

Vararam gives cool air which lowers intake air temperature by 30 degrees.

For each 10 degree of intake air temperature. you gain an additional 1% more hp that wont so up on the "static dyno".

The Halltech T1 I personally installed on my car took 10 minutes to install and the cool air comes through on my Z06 grill. Is it as cool as the Halltech Tric/Vararam/Vortex/CR motorsports cold air systems ..

NO..

But it installed in 10 minutes and it was good enough for me.

The same could be said of the blackwing as well.

Installs quickly and is a nice piece. (I had one on my 99 C5/ then went to cold air system and then on my 2001 Z06 I went with Halltech T1)

I'm into quick and easy and this air filter mod is the best bang for the buck..no matter which one you choose.

Good luck..

The Blackwing is the easiest to install -- and the safest if water intrusion is a concern. I have the Vortex with the clear housing. With it you can see whether the filter needs cleaning, and also whether leaves have become stuck in front of the radiator. I bought my Vortex from Exit-28 for $205 shipped.

The Vararam is the most expensive and the most difficult to install. It also comes with the most hype, IMO.

When I installed mine I also installed a Haltech C/F air-bridge and coupler, removed MAF sensor screens, Hypertech programmer, Bassani X-pipe, Borla "Stingers", Hotchkiss anti-roll bars with Z06 end-links, and lowered it 3/4" all around. So I can't really say whether there was a SOTP difference with just the air intake. But taken all together my car feels much more responsive now.

I bought most of my modest mods off the forums used -- and saved a bunch of money!!

I just installed the blackwing. totally stoked on the product, not so on the customer service. I recieved the unit with no instalation instructions . Lucky me, I happend to find a link on one of the threads that gave me some info on instalation, however even with that it took taking it completly back off to figure out that the rubber gromets from the original filter box were to be used. oh well. They did'nt forget to put some blackwing stickers in the box... dont think i'll stick them, they can.
