I bought the 07 Z because the info that I had then was that the 08 Z would be SCd. After being a hod rodder for over 40 yrs, I have some definite preferences in power plants. I'm a NA guy all the way except for the "Bad land" years starting in the mid-70s on thru the late 89s.
My 07 Z is more refined than my C5 Z by an astonishing amount. The changes from the 06 Z compared to the 07 Z are additional refinments.
Because of the stronger transmission and other lessor refinments, I would love to have the 08 Z because of the drivetrain upgrade. Needless to say, if I did buy the new 08 Z, My wife would have me singing at a much higher pitch before I got it home. (CRUNCH) if you know what I mean.
I'm at the end of my rope with my current car. No $100k ZR-1 here.

The "best year production" for the Z depends on what you want the car for. If you want the most "beastly" Z, then it would be the 2006 MY. It has the least comforts and the least refinements.
If you want the quickest, then because of the lack of insulation, once again the first year production is your car. (It's lighter.)
If you want the longest warranty available, then 2007 and up are for you.
If you want "better handling" then the 2008MY with the improved "steers & gears" might be for you.
I think "the best year production" is the car in your garage.
