I have the base 200hp 350 w/ auto tranny. Presently, it has a Q-Jet which is not the original. If I were to replace this carb; which would be the best to go with. I would like the most bang for the buck. Engine is otherwise stock.

Any recommendations?

A properly tuned Qjet is one of the best street carbs for a stock/modified street vette and it flows about 750 cfm. Dunno why you wish to replace your Qjet? If because you want more hotrod performance ... there's so many options.

If because yours is sick ... I have four suggestions:
(1) Have your non-OE Qjet rebuilt, setup & tuned by a pro ... the most bang for the buck.
(2) Replace w/ NEW Edelbrock 19xx series carb ... Rochester Qjet clone ... about $450.
(3) Replace w/ NEW Edelbrock 14xx series carb... Carter AFB clone ... about $250-$275.
(4) Replace w/ NEW Edelbrock 18xx series carb... Carter AFB clone but has a spreadbore pattern ... about $350-$400.

72 OE stock intake manifold is drilled for spreadbore (Qjet) pattern only ... Squarebore (most AFB & most Holley) will not fit. Holley makes just a couple carbs w/ spreadbore pattern.

Holley 4175 Spreadbore

I put a Holley 4175 spreadbore carb on my 74'. Its the direct bolt-on replacement for the Q-Jet and its working out well...

I replaced my Q- with one from Eldebrock works good

Had my Q-jet rebuilt by a pro, works great. Now what to do with the crate demon? build another engine I guess.

Stick with the Rochester or Edelbrock

I agree with Jack, your Rochester carb will out perform any Holley replacement and has a far better airflow that the normal 'run of the mill' Holley.
I have a Holley 650 CFM Double Pumper on my 81 Coupe at the moment and it runs crap! Too much fuel down low at idle and not enough airflow when you stomp on it.
It was a brand new Holley straight out of the box, when the last owner put it on, worst decision anyone could make!

You will probably find your Rochester has an airflow of between 750 CFM and 795 CFM.
I would fix your carb or find a carb with the same airflow. Even if you had to buy the Holley, buy a 750 CFM Vac Secondary carb.

Remember, it's not always extra fuel that gets the most amount of power, it's the airflow!
Fuel Injection runs between 1000 CFM and 1200 CFM, that's why the small block C4's have a bit more HP on the dyno.

Cheers from OZ!

Tony , are you using a stock manfold on your motor??

Yep, stock as a rock. The double pumper seems to make her run sooty and leaves soot marks on the driveway. I know I could jet the carb down, but it still hasn't the airflow GM designed for it.

Cheers

A 650 double pumper will run great if it is set up right. I'm currently using one on my LT-1, and my dad's got one on his 70 automatic. 650 cfm is more than enough airflow for most small blocks (depending on what the engine is, of course), as engines are usually not efficient enough to make full use of the carb's full air flow potential.

Check out these guys in CA. The come highly recommended from others that I have spoken too (sending them my carb in two weeks). Send them an email and you'll get a "very honest" reply. They deal in all makes and models of carbs.

As for my preferance - Q-Jet if it has been properly set up. You'll get better gas mileage and great performance.

Shawn :)

I would have my stock Q-Jet rebuilt and tuned properly, it's the best carb. you can put on your motor in my opinion, very reliable. I am running one on my car with an Edelbrock manifold, headers and a curve kit in my distibutor and it runs absolutely great, no problems at all.

Can anyone who has had their Q-Jet rebuilt tell me approx. how much it cost? Just curious. :)
