I need heads. I was wondering what the best deal on a good set of aluminum heads was? I am open to any suggestions anybody may have.

Tom,
hundreds of ways to go!! performance, price, intended use, etc. all have something to say about what head will be the best for you. then you can look at them all again under the ported and polished light to complicate things. what are you building and what do you want out of it??? AFR, GM Fastburn, Edelbrock, Brodix, Dart, World, Tickflow and many others all make aluminum heads. try shopping on carparts.com. my brother-in-law bought a set of Edelbrock rpm 195's with 2.02/1.60 valves for $700 complete. they were running a 50% off daily coupon, and shipping yielded the total price. high performance per dollar, it is hard to beat AFR. lower end motors, Edelbrock works good. whole lotta options, Brian

The heads are for the 383 stroker I am building. I want to run aluminium because of my 10:1 compression ratio i'm shooting for.
I want good street performance and of course a little ooomph at the strip.

Lift may be an issue but I want to go with a lift of around .520 or so.

Tom, Brian suggested AFR195's for my 383. They are awesome. Tons of low end torque and great for 10+cr. Mine is 10.3 with 93 octane ONLY. Fred.

tom,
lift is a function of your cam geometry and the arms in the head.

This I know, but when you look at some of the cylender heads they specify a max lift. I assume that the lift is only limited by the valve spring that comes on the head, but I also dont want to get a set of heads and have to turn right around and have to replace the valve springs.

So i need a good street head that will let me put in a big lift cam, any more suggestions would be welcom. right now I am leaning towards the twisted flow heads, I think I can get a set for under 900.

Tom,
the AFR's will allow up to .700 total lift. have you seen their website?? they do not need to be ported, and are the most durable head i have seen. the shop where i dynoed my motor does a bunch of circle and drag motors. i have seen just about every head blown out except the AFR's. the owner of the shop is so impressed with them, that he runs only them on his own motors. i truely belive they are worth the extra $200-$300. they are true bolt and run heads for high performance motors. i would suggest that you call the manufacturers and talk with them. ask about what they use as machine tools. you'll be suprized that most places use low end tooling and/or hand port their products. AFR has one of the best tooled shops and it is reflected in their heads. their CNC machine is the best money can buy. it's your money, so spend some time at the races and on the phone. you'll find AFR's are hard to beat, Brian
