ok, everyone with their winter projects has me ready to jump in...I can no longer put it off....it is time or this thing will sit in the garage forever.....I will post pictures as I go.....I have the Noland Adams BODY OFF book for the step by step removal of all the pieces and the checklist....I also have the AIM for the car.....the garage is as organized as it is going to get for now, but I am already seeing that I am going to have to lay some tables out in the basement to put things on with tags....otherwise the garage is going to fill up in a hurry....got the compressor fired up (had the guy that built the garage add the 230 volts for it...I hate messing around in the fuse box if I can help it)....now the question...

One of the first steps Noland gives is to remove the gas door and filler neck....seems to me that works well for the C2 bodies, but the door doesn't look like it is a problem at this point, perhaps later when it is time get after items for stripping and such....but it does seem that the filler neck needs to come out as it appears from the AIM book that the tank is attached to the frame with straps and when the body comes off, the tank will need to stay put.

Any good suggestions? On where to start? Looks to me to start with taking the gas tank cover off the soft top storage area and see if I can get to the clamps and such there.....I will check back in a little while....

good luck on your project. You know the CAC policy...... pictures are required as you make progress. If you don't take and post pictures than you aren't allowed to do the project! :D

there will be pictures....as ugly as they can be....until the corner is turned and things start to look better with new paint and cleaned up....actually this is Larry's fault....I wasn't going to pull the body off, but the more I looked at his car at Carlisle....the more I wanted the engine compartment and everything you see down there to look as good as the rest of the car....so the free fall begins....Larry...this is your fault and thats my story and I am sticking with it...if you car hadn't look soooooo good I wouldn't be going this far.....not going to do the tube frame, I could see even a further free fall....I am going to put the Myers front end on with rack and pinion and disc brakes for the front....at the end of this project we'll see where I head from there.....right now that seems a million miles away....

Herb, boy I sure know that feeling well. Why do you think i'm spending all this effort on my emgine compartment? After seeing so many other cars with beautifully detailed and flawless engine compartments I couldn't stand looking at mine anymore. Not to mention the constrast from my nice, fresh, shiny paint job and than the dirt, grime, chipped paint, and tarnished metal parts of my motor.

You are right on the money. You should be able to remove the clamps and the short connector hose after you remove the fiberglass tank cover that sets under the convertible top. I I could suggest one thing, take pictures of everything prior to disassembling and store the pictures in files like frame, body, interior exct.

Good Luck!

The rubber isolator around the filler neck inside the gas tank door, when the clamps are removed from the tank, does that just pull out? Or is there a slight trick to doing that?

The AIM manual looks to have TWO clamps on the hose to the tank, but I only see one here unless it is buried up further in the tank area. Glad to see the tank looks to be in real good shape. So are you suggesting that all I need to do is get the filler neck out as well as take the bolts out that hold the tank in with those two straps and I should be good to go?

Herb

The hose connect to the tank and to the filler tube. I can't remember if you need to remove both prior to removing the tank or just the end from the tank. Remove the one from the tank and proceed from there.

Everything looks nice and rust free.

Good Luck

I am pretty amazed at the lack of rust all over the car...whoever had it over the years kept it out of harms way for the most part...some areas like around the radiator frame had some rust down in the bottom of it, but I think that is to be expected....almost all bolts have come out with out much of a battle.....the reall tiny little ones and I mean tiny that held the two lower halves of the radiator shroud together in the center, one of them broke off as it was rusted, but the other two came right out....so far so good...the frame looks to be in real good shape, in fact the front suspension piece that I will have to remove for the Myers front end looks in really great shape...will make a nice replacement for someone I am sure....

Herb,
Keep in mind that there is not really any reason to remove the tank prior to removing the body. The tank is not attached to the frame in any way and will come right off with the body once you remove the gas line. After removing the filer neck, just remove the two bolts and pull the straps off, and the tank will pull right out. Sometimes they stick a little to the strips of felt that cushion is on the underside, but it will come right loose from them with a little persuasion.

ahhh...that is the key thing I needed....it doesn't have to come out NOW.....I would like to get to the point where the body comes off the fastest....figuring with good progress that will keep me moving.....the more I look at the car the more it seems to me that there shouldn't be that much to getting it off the frame....am I wrong? from where I am now...front and back bumpers, wiring out of the way, steering column out, hmmm....I dont have the book in front of me....but it can't be too much more or is it?

Herb this is called positive thinking.

thru out every project I have ever done I always keep thinking I am almost done and from this moment on it just gets easeyer.

Just dont lose that type of thinking. What jams you up is when you look at the car and say "Man I ll never finish this thing"

Again good luck

Herb,
You are absoultley correct, there just ain't much to pulling the body off of a C1 ! fuel line, brake lines, bumpers, wiring, splash shields, and the body mount bolts and you are about ready to lift the body!

Wiring? If the motor is out and all the stuff associated with it is out....isn't the rest of the wiring attached to the body and not go through the frame?

The fuel line needs to be disconnected down under the car where the line comes out of the tank area....correct?

Antenna ground strap to frame?

If weight is a concern at all as it was for me. (I just wanted the darn thing as light as possible when I started hoisting it up in my garage.) I removed the hood, deck lid, trunk lid, fuel tank, and windshield.

I don't expect the weight to be a problem.....I plan on using the 4 post lift to lift the body off....I figure I will get the frame done and then turn my attention to the body.....at least that is the plan now....I know I need to be thinking about lead times because it does take time to get the various parts new or to get pieces chromed.....but that is my plan.....

Make your list and take advantage of disounts. This year was a misrable year for trim parts for a C1 I am still waiting on the rear convertable top hold down.

:duh

I agree with Larry, watchout for backorders on many parts. I wish I had planned a little better for this, but I didn't know it was going to be such a big issue. Paragon has a nice discount program as do some others, 10-15%.
