brakes weak.............

My brakes on my 89 coupe sre weak. I have to put my foot almost to the floor to stop. I is almost like i have only front or rear brakes working not both. Need some help as to what to look for thanks..................

Bleeding the brakes is the way to go. Start with the wheel with the longest brake line and move your way to the shortest line (driver's front).

You're stopping on probably your front brakes only.
You've got a bad brake mastercylinder - mine did exactly this about six months ago, and I found a rebuilt unit that works fine for $79.
The catalog outfits want an obscene amount for a rebuild!
Fix it NOW!

If you do the M/C replacement carefully, you won't even need to bleed the system afterwards.

Leaky vacuum booster gives a REALLY hard pedal, not long pedal travel.

Start with bleeding the brakes since it is the cheapest route and go from there.

Go out and buy a couple of pints of good brake fluid, a turkey baster, and a set of speed bleeders. Check your pads and see if you need new ones, now is a good time to install them.

Use the baster to remove all the fluid from the master cylinder. fill the master cylinder and bleed the brakes until fresh fluid comes out. You will need to top off the master cylinder often!

When done you should have great brakes. If not then its time to check the master cylinder out

Not to belabor the point, but if you're pedal is traveling to the floor, it's already past time to replace something.

If your brakes need bleeding - how did that come about?
That's right: Something failed.

Check out your calipers: If none of them are leaking, go for a ride on a loose gravel, dirt, or sandy road - anything with a slippery surface.
Apply the brakes until you get wheel lockup.
Was it the fronts only or the rears only?
If so, it's mastercylinder time!
