My Alternator/Power Steering belt snapped today. I had to get gas before I went to the house so 1 start and about 5 miles of driving (some with the radio before I realized the alt wasn't charging) killed my battery enough that the car wouldn't start a 2nd time. I changed the belt (had another on hand :D, and rolled the car down a little slop to pop the clutch and start her up.

Now I'm back to where I was before I got a new alternator...NO CHARGE! When there is nothing on with the car running, the gauge shows a full charge. If I turn the lights or anything else on, it goes to zero. I blew the altenator didn't I? Can it be rebuild or does it need to be replaced?

Thanks for the help. Oh Yeah, nice to see all these new members around here. I like you old ones too.:beer

Tony:
Disconnect the battery and put a charger on it ... overnight if possible ... get a full charge into it. Then reconnect & see if you still have probs.

Allyays REBUILD the alt you will get a better job. ask me how I know this.

Alternators weren't designed to charge the battery - just to maintain its charge. If the battery goes dead (for whatever reason), you're always better off to charge the battery up before you drive the car; otherwise the alternator has to produce full current for an extended period of time to charge the battery back up, and that kills some of them. :r

It was the diodes.

Got it tested. It's under warranty...just sucks to have to send it backand wait.
