Does anyone know if the build sheet is inside the 86 vette? I'm trying to figure out if I have cast iron or amluminum heads and you can't see the stamping on the motor with everything in the way.

Either on top of the gas tank or inside the front crossmember with the front spring is where I'd look for the sticker.

As for aluminum heads, all 86 Convertibles had them and most late production Coupes had them. With the coupes, the exact break point between iron and aluminum heads is unknown, but Antonick's Black Book has stated for a number of years that "...it is believed that the last 8594 coupes had them."

As for whether or not you have them on the car in question, if they're iron they'll be painted black. If they're aluminum they'll be unpainted and silver.

Don't the aluminum heads have the center bolt pattern heads for the valve covers? I know mine does. I've never really looked at many cars without AL heads.

That's true:thumb

I will look around for the build sheet, maybe I'll get lucky and it will be in the frame. I bought the car new in 86, it's a coupe and I took delivery the end of March right about when GM made the change. It has 18K on it and it still looks new. The heads are silver so I assume it's aluminum.

Sounds like a very nice automobile. Are the bolts that hold the valve covers on in the middle of the valve cover?

Post some pics of your ride. With that low mileage, it is practically brand new!!

I checked the valve covers and they are the center bolt design..

Very nice. I wonder if the last 86 coupe with iron heads, and the first with AL heads will be worth anything? Does anyone know if they were sold to the public?

You have aluminium heads and the build sheet is on the top driver side of the gas tank. You wil have to remove the rear panel of the car to get at it.

The one in the crossmember will be unreadible from road grime and usually falls to bits when you try to remove it.

You can always 'order' a new build sheet from the National Corvette Museum. The NCM has almost every build sheet since the Corvette started production in Bowling Green.

"Capt" Tuna is right on that. You can get "new" build sheets from the NCM.

I took everyones advice and ordered one form the museum...easier than taking the car apart.

I wonder if there's any way to find out which was the first aluminum head vehicle? I got my build sheet today and it has the ZJS motor which is the aluminum heads with the engine oil cooler. How do you decifer the date 86/044? Thanks for the help!
