Just saw A story on the news here where police have arrested 1 of A group of guys that were posting vintage muscle cars on E-Bay (mostly Vette's) when the buyers showed up to pick up their cars they would take them to the garage that the buyer thought it was in and then hold them up @ gun point

This has long been a concern out west, where potential buyers do the same. All car dealers now photocopy the driver license before test drives. Private sales, for me, are a hassle and most dangerous with a 'hot' car, but inital meetings take place in a very public place, preferably with a pal along with me.

I looked all over the news and didn't see anything about this. If you wanted to rob someone, why go through the hassle of setting up an elaborate scheme on ebay when you could hold up any average joe on the street.

There are always scams, but I agree, there are prolly easier ways to rob someone.
A reasonable person who buys a car on Ebay, or from anyone they don't know, would want a 'paper trail', like a wire transfer or bank check-- not cash.

I agree....they would have the money on them....they need to make the transaction in a public place and take a witness with you...

A sucker is born every day!

And let me tell you that when you really think that you are getting the steal of the century that is the time to look out.

I wouldn't bring cash with me but l would bring a friend with a shotgun if l was concerned. In fact if l was concerned l wouldn't go period.

Yes, it was on the news. I heard it on 780 AM Chicago radio. The way I heard it, the potential buyer did not necessarily know that the seller ws a part of the scheme. It was made to look like a coincidental robbery.
The cars supposedly for sale were to be 60's to 70's muscle cars and cash deals are pretty common for those cars. Same with street rods - especially so now that it has been learned that there are counterfeit money orders and bank drafts being used for big dollar items.
Cash is also king because it gives the buyer a little more bargaining power unless the sale was a fixed price like ebay. Whether I have cash or a bank draft, I usually have two friends with me - and they are both loaded.

There allot of phony bills out there too.
The last guy that brings it to the bank takes the loss.

people always seem to use their smarts in a negative way.
