Anyone know somewhere to rent or (yuk) buy specialized GM tools for rebuilding old 4-speeds? I'm looking for J5590, bearing installer, but would really like to find J24658, countershaft bearing loader. Thanks!

Frank :confused

I rebuilt a 75 ST-10 last summer and didn't use any special tools other then I had.Flat snap ring pliers(Sears), a shop press to remove the countershaft, I used transmission asssemble grease to hold the needle bearing in place. The ST-10's are a little more tricky then a Muncie because of the front bearing being pressed in. But it canbe done.

Thanks, coupeman. My brother-in-law has the trans at the moment... he's a mechanic, and has access to a press at his shop. I'm hopeful we can crack the code and not have tooo much trouble getting it back together. I'll post an update when we get there. The weather's been miserable here for the past couple of weeks, so doing it after work, in the cold and rain has slowed us down a bit.

Good luck, they're not too bad. the trick I used to remove the front bearing was to remove the counter shaft first. The countershaft had a woodruff key in it so be careful when pressing it out that you don't crack the case. There must be a special puller for the front bearing but I didn't use one. Once the countershaft is removed the there will be clearence to remove the main shaft then drive out the front bearing when clear.

Thanks for all the advice. Currently the tranny is in pieces at "the shop," and it appears it's not the first time it's been taken apart (whoever did it the last time didn't know to take the countershaft pin out 1st and did, in fact, crack the case slightly). Should be able to put it back together ok and hopefully repair the crack well enough to prevent leaks, but it bothers me that it got cracked in the first place. I located and downloaded the GM service bulletin that has the step-by-step procedure for how to rebuild it, with pictures, no less, and it plainly states to tap that pin out. Anyway, the rebuild is going well, and here's a pic of the "parts" very partially reassembled.....

I'd like to see that GM web site you're referring to. BTW it's a woodruff key in the counter shaft shouldn't be a pin?

The GM service bulletin is a download at the Corvette Faq website, http://www.corvettefaq.com/ It's under "transmission" BW ST-10 rebuild instructions. I think we're talking about the same thing as far as a woodruff key, my nomenclature was just less descriptive (accurate)...

Thanks Frank, I'll check out the FAQ site, I've been there before.
