I need to replace the choke tube on my '60 283 with WCFB. The old one is broken off inside the exhaust manifold, something I've just become aware of upon removing my valve covers.
Here's the carb end of the tube which is a hand in glove fit.

Here is the broken manifold end.

I need to get the broken end out of the manifold. What's the best way to do that? I'm having a hard time picturing what the manifold end is supposed to look like. What's involved with installing it? Lastly, if the insulation doesn't come with the new one should I take it off the old one and slide it on the new one (after giving it a haircut)? :D Thanks in advance for your comment.

The gray hunk on the broken end of the tube is part of the steel insert tube that goes from the top of the manifold hole to the bottom; it's installed from the bottom, and "staked" in place.

You'll need to drive out the remaining insert tube (from the top) and replace it (from the bottom) before you replace the upper heat tube. Paragon has replacement insert tubes (their #4003, $15.00), and they also have the upper heat tube.

Thanks John. Can you tell me what you mean by "staked"?

The bottom end of the tube was smacked with a cold chisel against the end of the hole in the manifold so it didn't work loose; you can "un-stake" it with a punch or small chisel.

Will I be able to get at the bottom to stake the new one without removing the manifold?

It's a LOT easier to do with the manifold off the car - I'd remove it and do it on the bench where you can see what you're doing.
