So the car made it work..but getting back was a bit MORE of a thrill.

On the way home.. the needle was sitting at 235 the WHOLE WAY.. and I ignored it...
( not that I was sweating bullets or anything).

And I was SURE when I pulled in for gas that I would boil over.. or at least vent into the overflow.... NOTHING.. not even a gurgle.

I knew something was WRONG with the temp sender.. as far as calibration goes. I stopped @ the AUTO ZONE in Burbank to get a WELLS TU-5 for $5.95 that John Z touted to have a closer calibration then other senders.

The 64 currently has what looks like a Standard Ignition TS-6 sending unit..

I have another one in the 327 new motor..I bought another TS-6 last night.

Here are some static readings.
SO
At room temp 75 degrees ish

Wells TU-5 577 ohms
Standard TS-6 516 ohms ( new )
Standard TS-6 548 ohms ( installed)

Now as far as the gauge itself goes

You have 5 marks 100/140/180/210/240
140 & 210 are not ID'ed as such but they would be the 2 hash marks.

I took a variable resistor and wired it in place of the sender... dialed the pot for readings and here's what came out.

Open circut the needle sits there at 100deg
575 ohms = 110 degrees
186 ohms = 140 degrees
140 ohms = 180 degrees
84 ohms = 210 degrees
60 ohms = 240 degrees

and anything less than 40 will play pin the needle ( HOT )

Measurement of existing system
The sender on the engine read 230 ohms.
the gauge was OVER 120 ( via eyeball ) but the measured temp
( via automotive therometer)The coolant in the radiator was UNDER 100 degrees.. engine running for a few minutes.

So I believe the calibration of the Standard Ignition sender for water temp is not so good. I'll have to do the math, but I believe there is a 30 degree LEAD in my instrument.

The oil was fine ( but it burned at least a qt over the last tank).. but I believe that is due to bad rings...low compression.. the plugs are a fluffy powder black as well as the pipes... and I think the carb is jetted 2-4 jet sizes to big ( running FAT ).

So that's the news from this end for today.

where are the pictures?

All kidding aside vig isnt it fun shaking out the bugs?

Wasnt it a blast on it maiden voyage to work for the first time thinking

Am I going to make it
is she going to spit up when I pull into the lot
is she going to leave an oil slick that the dec will be chasing me for
is she going to make it home

I remember my first shake down runs of all my cars and remember planning what I should carry with me on the first long run.I can tell you storeys but I wont. Best of luck

LOL

Sorry, no pix's as of yet...
To much time in other area's

None of my Corvettes have tow hitches...
if they did I would carry a small garage with me...

So these days.. I just bring a cell phone & plastic ( incase of breakage)

But so far so good...I do not think I will take her out till the next phase of trouble shooting/ wrencing.. maybe monday!

Vig~
