I bought a spare tire lock recently for my '66 coupe. It can be pulled right off the bolt when it's supposed to be locked. Holding the lock in your hand, is the locking rod supposed to be able to be pushed back in when the key is in the locked position? I don't understand how the lock can possibly work if all you have to do is wiggle it around to put pressure on the rod so that it retracts and slides right over the tire lock bolt. The bolt has a shoulder on it which facilitates the removal in the locked position. What am I missing?

CAn you take aphoto of your bolt to make sure it what belongs there

Terry -- Yes, you can put the lock on the spare tire bolt while it is in the locked position. I just did it on mine. The lock shaft is spring loaded. You can push it in and out while it is in the lock position. The key moves the shaft in and out -- mostly used for out to remove the lock. The lock fits over the hex head bolt and this shaft sits above the head of the bolt. The head of the bolt keeps the lock from coming off. You can push the lock on the hex head bolt while it is locked but you cant pull it off. You can have a locksmith change the lock to match you glovebox key if you need to. Hope this helps.

If I could figure out what happened to the manage attacments box I would. Where did it go?

Ditto to John's post above - my plunger works freely with the lock in my hand, and I can push it on over the bolt, but can't pull it off without unlocking it.The "Manage Attachments" box apparently disappeared with the forum software upgrade (among other things) - I'm told Rob is working feverishly on the problems. :)

I've solved the problem. I had mentioned this problem to a club member previously and he brought me a spare bolt, an original that he had laying around, so I could try the lock on it. Works like a charm. I'm not sure what the hell I have on the car now but it's not the right bolt. Everything looks just like the correct one except the head on the bolt has a not so sllight shoulder on it. The original has a 90 degree delineation from head to shaft and the lock goes on tight and won't pull off. Who makes this crap? The happy ending is that my club buddy told me if I could use it to just keep it.

John, I'm having a ball. It's actually been quite educational so far and I'm really getting to know the car. That's not to say I haven't been frustrated at times. I'm pretty sure I'd go to jail soon after I met the Bubba who forced a coarse thread bolt into the end of a crankshaft with fine threads. I think the next big issue is going to be getting the front end to sit down. I'm going to post a new thread asking for some advice from the gang regarding how to proceed with that. If anybody has any advice please look for my thread titled Front end too high. Thanks.

Unless it is REALLY high you probably wont lose any judging points for this condition. Maybe 1 or 2 out of the 4500 if that. You may want to move on to something else. Make sure you come through the operations tests clean -- you can really lose points there.
