1966,and a 1962 thats almost complete
So this sunday I had a whole day planned out of wanted to accomplish, only one thing got in my way,the gas tank.I figured I would get the tank in and then get my seats mounted.(Never got to touc the seats today) hopefully tomorow night

WOW was that a tight fit.Its a quanta tank but I think it is slightley over sized. That and the tank straps seem to be a little thicker so between the 2 it was almost impossible to get it in place.I actually had to use a 2X4 and a 1X3 to work it into place with a lump hammer.Once in place I had to use longer bolts to pull the straps down prior to be able to install the correct bolts,What should have been an hour job took me the better part of the day.

Larry,
Ain't it a bi*ch that they don't go back together as fast as they came apart! LOL If all the things that I have being reading about the repro tanks is correct, the cover won't fit after the tank is in either! Can't speak to that on my car since I used one of Rock Valley's stainless tanks with the pump in tank to feed the LS1.

Well I owe it to Quanta to call them and let them know the problem. For sure the cover will go on ,NO problem,if you just queeze in the tank and let it be the cover wont fit.I can see where others may have left the tank as it was not understanding it needed to be rotated into the correct position,I am sure if the cant get the cover on all the way it would be in the back area because they could not rotate it into position

I had to sqeeze it in,then kick it/tweek it/encourage it with the 2X4 towards the front and then was able to drive the rear section down, while pushing the front section up just a tad ( I set up 2 long thin chizels under my car on the lift in thru the holes where the front staps connet to ,then lowered the car enough to load the chizels to push up on the front of the tank while I was pushing foward and down on the back side of the tank with the 2X4)and I was able to rotate it into place where it belongs,I used a set of dividers to determine that the problem is with there height. It almost seems as if they used the excisting outside of the tank as a mold, instead of using the inside of the tank as the slug. I havent heard they were having problems with there tanks other wise I may of chozen a different tank. I always use quanta for my tanks because of there High quaility. This was the first time ever I had a problem with one of there products.

I can tell you this is the first time in awhile I had to resort to using a lump hammer to install a part on my car and I can attest to them using a high quaility steel as the tank did not dent from my work with the 2X4 and lump hammer.

Larry, I feel your frustration. I went through the exact same process with the tank on the 57' I hate repro stuff thats not right :mad Why do they even bother if they aren't going to do it right. :confused

Larry:

I had the same problem with a Quanta tank. Had to bend the "lips" somewhat to get it in, but the cover fit OK.

I did one in my 66 and let me tell you the midyear tanks are a breeze compaired to the one I just did.

I am NOT slamming Quanta there products have been perfect! with the exception of this tank

From reading this I am now thinking that I should keep the extra original tank I had cleaned checked and coated my 1957, even though I continually am moving it around my shop barking my shins on it occasionally. Just another reason to go original, original parts that is..... Good luck with your battle.

I just spoke with Quanta.they explained the problems are few and far in between them,as explained to me the problems ones were from the halfs not being squared up properly. In thinking about it,if the manufacturure air tested them with too much pressure that would explain the problem I had.I wonder if they air test them under HIGH pressure causing the tank to exspand

I removed my 61 tank with no problem. After cleaning and pressure testing I reinstalled it and it was a job getting it back in. I used a 2' 2x4 and a mallet and a couple of good taps and it dropped in. I think it is a tight fit even with a good tank. I don't know why it came out so easy but I must have gotten lucky for a change :)
