Hi all,

I'm trying to decode the VIN # for my '59 Corvette, and am having trouble with the breakdown... From what I've seen on the web, it breaks down as follows:

J= Corvette model
59= year produced
S= St Louis MO plant

Then, there are 6 numbers that are supposed to identify the production number. There were only 9670 produced that year, and the numbers begin with "10" (ie 109670). If there were only 9670 produced, what does the "10" stand for?

Thanks,

CHEV66JB

All GM VIN numbers in those days had six digits by default, and St. Louis was assigned "1" as the first digit in their VIN sequence; what you see is perfectly normal.

I thought for 1963, it was:
3 (1963)
08 (Chevrolet Corvette)
67 (Converible)
or else
37 (Coupe)
S (St Louis)
and then the 6 digit sequential number?

Think of it this way...the first car built was 100,001. 6 digit sequence. Chuck
