Thought this might be helpful to some of you C1 guys some day. My drivers side wiper transmission was hooked up backwards and I had to detach the cables and reroute them correctly. If you understand how the transmission works (which I didn't till recently) this may make sense to you. The problem I was having reattaching the cables was that I couldn't get the two butted pulleys to lock back up to each other after depressing the wiper shaft, pulling out the cables and then releasing the shaft so the spring loaded pulleys would lock back together and give me the slack I needed to reattach. The pulleys just wouldn't lock back up as the "catches or pawls" must be worn. Therefore it was impossible for me to reattach the cables. Since the transmission was otherwise okay but worthless if I could't reattach the cables I decided to do some surgery.
• First I removed the driver side wiper trans.
• Next I put the properly threaded cables in a vise as close to the pulleys as possible. I wedged a large screwdriver between the pulleys and the vise and pulled out as much cable slack as possible, about an 3/4 inch.
• Next I clamped the two pullies together with a ready at hand pre-adjusted vice grip
• With the vise grip holding the pulleys from unwinding I drilled a small hole through both of the pulleys in an area that wouldn't damage any working parts. (I used disassembled pulley photos as a guide for good drilling spot)
• After drilling the hole I placed a pin in the hole going through both pulleys and then removed the vice grips. The pin now keeping the pulleys from unwinding.
• I reinstalled the wiper transmission, properly hooked up the slacked cables and pulled the pin out and the cables tightened up beautifully. :)
